What do you think is the age when we should start earning to pay our bills on our own?

At the early 20s we start feeling shy to ask for money from our parents. However our education doesn't seem to end atleast till we are 23. What do you think is the correct age when we should start earning and release our parents from a little financial pressure.

In our family , we were expected to go to work by the age of 14 even if it was a part time to help with bills, but I would say around the age of 18, you should be able to pay your own way, unless you are attending college and might need to stay home, even so you should have part time job.
I think it really depends on the circumstances.

My parents did not want me to go out to work, but I started doing babysitting pretty young. Maybe 13. However my money was for my activities and for the kinds of things I wanted. Each of us when we went to work gave my mother money because she did not have an outside income.

I agree that it is different for each family and each family member should contribute when working

@cynthiann Definitely they should. Each member should take it as a responsibility not a burden.

I think it depends on a few things. If my children continue their education then I will, as far as I possibly can, continue to support them financially until they finish. That's because I know how hard it is to try and study full time while also working. Also, I don't want them thinking they have to miss out on a better education and on the jobs they really want because they feel obliged to contribute.
I would, however, expect them to earn as soon as they could find work after completing their education. Then they would be expected to contribute towards household bills. Both of my boys are really good already though. They are only 15 and 10 years old so, of course, I don't expect a financial contribution from them but they are not greedy and both have offered to use their own pocket money for things. The little one went to the shop and, as I went to give him some money, he said he would use his own because he used it too so it's up to all of us to pay, just as it's up to all of us to keep the home clean and tidy! I thought that was quite lovely of him but explained that, while I did expect the boys to contribute to household chores, I didn't yet expect them to pay for shopping. :)

When my children contracted bills of their own they paid them. I asked each of them to go to work when they quit going to school.

@GardenGerty In our society too, we start to earn once we are done with studies.

Nice post!
The simple answer in the context of those living in India is - when you complete your education, means at least you become a graduate, you could start earning. I have seen many doing part-time jobs even while doing graduation e.g. giving tutions etc.
In India, parents are always protective and supportive and they do not mind even when their wards do not start earning even after completing their education.
If you feel shy of asking money from your parents, you should better look out for a part time job to become self dependent.

@phoonk - You are welcome. Never feel shy to go for a part time job. I have heard people working in restaurants and indulging in marketing etc. on part time basis. Having earned at least their pocket money gives them self confidence and freedom of spending as per their will.

@dpk262006 Thank you. Parents of India are really super supportive. I guess you are right. Doing a part time job will be the best option for me.

Different families need to deal with their financial situations which is the best way for them. We can't all be like the Jackson 5. But we don't need to be like Marvin Gaye cause he was way too old to be living at home.

I think that it depends on the money the parents have and what the young people are doing. I donĀ“t think that it is a matter of age. We helped our daughters while they were studying as much as we could but we helped with necessities and not with luxuries

@phoonk Yes I do appreciate this. Do complete your studies first. In India, parents are more loving and caring than in many other parts of the world - they will continue caring for you. Once you have completed your studies, get a better job, enable yourself such that you can be capable to care for them when they actually need your care, your time and maybe some of your money

As long as one of legal age to work, then that is the suitable time to start working. But if you are still a student, then you should wait till you finish your studies. Don't we forget that we can earn much more with our education for having better paying jobs.

For me it should be as soon as possible after we finish college. Tho I also know its not easy to find a good job that could make us sufficiently able to shoulder financial responsibility specially for fresh graduates but by that age too is the right time to start living in reality.
