Now why did anyone ever say that?..who really lays on hay anymore to go to sleep..when i think of hay, i think of hayrides,in fields and fun with others as teens..Having so much fun and never caring what might happen...When was the last time you had anything to do with hay?

@Rosekitty That's true. We are so spoiled these days, aren't we? Get me some memory foam and then I'll sleep on it - ha ha!

When I was at boarding school the under-mattress was two square bags of hessian stuffed with hay or straw. I think that was the last time I have been known to 'hit the hay' literally.
A long time ago I remember helping with the hay harvest on an uncle's farm. We had to go along the rows left by the mechanical scythe and pile the now dried and sweet-smelling hay into haycocks with a pitchfork, ready, I believe, for the baler (or maybe for the hay cart). It was very hot and dusty work and I remember being extremely grateful for a long drink of lemonade and a cool shower.
Hey! There's lots of other things come to mind, too, but I have to go and collect my grand-daughter from work and take her to a sports shop (or something).

This makes me feel old as it was probably long before I ever got married the first time.

My dad used to say that all the time. I guess you just get expressions like that from your parents who got them from their parents, on down the line. i see a lot of hay, since I live in a rural area. I see it growing, I see it being cut, and I see he bales in the fields. So far I've never seen beds made of it for humans, but I do see it for animals.

I have an absolutely lovely memory of hay. It was the last time I was in it.
And literally in it. It was the best summer of my life with my then first husband.
It was in the North of England in the dales and in a big pile of hay in a big old barn.
Well you can guess, and wouldnt you know it, I lost my lovely gold hoop earings that he had bought for me in that hay.
Well it was golden is all I can say :) Hey, hay.

As a cereal dust induced asthmatic and hat fever sufferer hitting the hay is the last thing that I ever want to do. Of course there are fun things to be done in the hay - several 18/19th century authors wrote novels that included the activities that might be pursued there. Wink!

one of those old terms that just sticks around from when people used to stuff their mattresses with hay or straw for bedding............i am sure you could come up with more out dated sayings that we all still use if you thought about it...

I used it in fruit baskets. But now I use paper shreds for that and it works just as well.

I don't remember the last time, but I remember very well the first : I was 9 or 10 when I rolled up on hay in a barn, and a few hours later my skin was full of red spots and I scratched myself during 2 or 3 days. Hay is full of dangerous tiny animals.

I have done this on very few occasions, first time I was 9 and the last time as much I remember I must be 15 or sixteen. I can very well remember we were visiting one of my uncles farmhouse in a town for reunion of my mother's relatives and in all we were almost 20 children in the age group of 6-12. We all went inside the big hall where the stuff was stocked up to roof top and did everything possible in there. That was fun and later when our mothers caught us covered full of hay what happened that is something to remember too.

Actually two weeks ago but for a very different reason I used it as mulch around my new flowers I had planted to keep them moist at least that is the plan before the hot summer arrives. Sleep well.

Hay was once used as beds thrown on dirt floors by most of humanity. Later, stuffed inside mattresses. Thus hit the hay. Good to meet you, sleep well tonight!
