Mythical creatures seem real to children

There are so many movies, books and television programs on creatures like werewolves, vampires, mermaids and dragons that young children cannot seem to differentiate between myth and reality. My six year old son heard a dog howling and really thought that there is a werewolf in the neighbourhood thanks to repeated watching of Harry Potter movies. I am not sure if this is a healthy thing.

This is something that is healthy developmentally for children at this age, that is why make believe play and anything to do with their imagination really comes out at this point in their life. Just as they will realize or be told about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy so too will they realize about the werewolves. But at the same time what is so bad about believing in something that will keep your child safe from going out in the woods by himself at night. I would only start to worry if he has an excessive amount of nightmares or night terrors that are associated with his belief.

Children needs to believe that fairies, Santa Claus and werewolves are real. At my time, there was no werewolf in the neighborhood , only a fearsome wolf that would have eaten me if I would have dared to go outdoors during the night , and a fairy bringing some cookies in my room if I had been a good boy. When children realize that wolves and fairies are not real, life becomes a bit more difficult for their parents.
