Something Strange is Falling From the Sky

I have just heard a few loud bangs and then a pitter patter of rain. Gentle soft rain. Readers - this isn't Jamaican rain as Jamaican rain is loud, noisy, brash, in-you-face-stingy rain! For the past five minutes it droppeth like the gentle rain from heaven - where did I hear that phrase? Was it from Julius Caesar? lol I know that I have been moaning about the heat and drought and people and children carrying buckets of water etc. so I am thinking that one of you sent us a little rain? So come on! Own up and let me thank you. Oops! It is becoming harder so maybe this rain does belong to us after all? What do you think?

Something strange has been falling here too since almost a couple of months but so inconsistent that when you are equipped it will not fall and vice versa

@thesids 'Those days' are always missed wherever they would have been. Weather then was predictable.

@allknowing: That reminds me of the good old days of Doordarshan - late 1980s when they had started some animated versions of Weather Forecast. The day it showed umbrellas on our city, we were assured that it may get cloudy but wont rain.... But surely, those days were more fun.

We should have had buckets in May but none came! Neither last year and then the forecast is for a worse drought next year!

@cynthiann - this is the first year in 5 that we've had anything like our normal amount of rain, and most of that came in MAY! It really was bad, there was flooding that took several lives.

If it falls in your yard it belongs to you. Some of us have been discussing trying to develop a pipeline from the eastern US to those who are desperate for rain.

I love your response! Climate change will affect every country eventually. We are destined to go into drought so we must store underground to prevent loss by evaporation

Sounds good to me. in some states, though, it's against the law to collect water that falls from the sky.

LOL.........The quote is from the Merchant of Venice, Portia's famous speech. Anyway, we have been getting WAY too much rain here so I sent it away.........who knew it would make it all the way to Jamaica!

@cynthiann No probs......I was an English Major, and had to memorize SO many speechs! My memory's not the best these days, but some things just stick in my head. As for the rain.........we have just entered a real heat wave, so you may have to send the rain back! lol

Portia: "The quality of mercy is not strained, It falleth like the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath, etc., etc.," You've got me running Shakespeare speeches through me head now! Thanks a lot!

The rain here comes generally with thunders. You are drenched to the bones in 2 mn if you are outdoors, but it does not last long : a few minutes to one or two hours. I started my studies in a city where the rain was a fine mist. It was starting in November and stopping in March. It was something unbearable for me. Since this moment, I hate drizzles and mists. Send me a good Jamaican rain

Well it has lasted about 20 minutes and is stopping now but I welcomed it. The garden got soaked and the car got a wash (banned at the moment) and it is soooo much more cooler. Unfortunately it hasn't fallen within the vicinity of the dams but farmers got rain for their crops so this is good. I would not like to live in a country with continuous rain - drive me mental! Just noticed that you are from France! My second favourite city! My first being London and third being Rome!

@cynthiann Indeed, rains are good for farmers. We have some rain since a week here, and it is a good thing, as we had a heatwave last month. My favorite city is Venice, except when the mist is there. I don't know if Shakespeare went to Venice but "the gentle rain from heaven" are from the Merchant of Venice. It was not in Paris. There is often some drizzle in Paris, but it does not last during months. I am living now in South-Western France, in the Cognac area (I don't tell the city : everybody knows Cognac, but nobody knows any city except Paris in France).

@cynthiann I ended my college studies and worked in Paris, and honestly I prefer to live in a provincial town. Even if I miss a lot of things, like theaters, opera, national archives..., the quality of life is better. If you have the opportunity, take a few days to visit Venice. It is not an ordinary city, and I felt in love with it. I even considered to buy a house there to retire. When I was young, I spent a lot of holidays in UK (I had a great aunt in Blackpool, and her children were in Torquay and in the Channel Islands, in Guernsey).

I am happy to read that you are finally getting some relief cynthiann. Is it really true, is it raining for a good while now, or is it just a sprinkle? Yes, I believe it may have been Shakespeare ..

It has just stopped and si we had rain for about twenty minutes, I called my SIL who lives near a large dam and they have not received the rain yet but the sky is overcast so maybe some rain will fall in the dam! It was slow and steady but it is now cooler and so appreciated and my lawn is giving thanks!

@cynthiann I get so even more hot when it rains only for a while in the heat, it becomes even more steamy, as if you are in a steam room here. Unless the wind blows, it just doesn't do.

I just viewed on tv that over 1.2 million acres are on fire. It is awful! I am so sorry and hope that it can be brought under control but with high winds it is a dreadful problem to deal with. God help everyone who is involved and may no lives be lost.

It is our second year of drought and next year is expected to be worse. People have suffered so very much. The September/October rains have yet to arrive - only a few showers have fallen. We are building underground water storage containers but what we can afford is not enough. Most of our rivers are dry! We had a shower yesterday and I just stood in my garden and let it fall on me! It felt so wonderful.

@arthurchappell It is 5.30 am and I am in bed listening to some rain falling.Wonderful sound. I hope that this is the beginning of our month of rain. People get so angry when they are suffering from lack of a regular water supply. Going to make a cup of coffee and come back to bed for a while! Have a happy day!

Not Julius Caesar. From the Merchant of Venice. That mercy quote. It wasn't Texas. We pray for rain and when we get it we drink it up so fast there's none to share or send to other places. Drought can be horrible here!

We certainly do and we are frantically building underground water storage facilities as dams no longer cut it! With climate change the water is evaporating at a faster rate so building more dams is not the answer. Underground is the way to go. Am I boring? I don't mean to be!

@cynthiann Not boring at all. But underground storage could also turn against us. As we see already, nature is causing those sinkholes all over the planet. That of course, is due to erosion.
