The DMV is so much fun!

NOT! For those of you that don't know, my mom has dementia (it is in the advanced stage). Back in March of this year, I had to take her to the DMV to get her an ID. Where her previous one was, I don't know (and no, I didn't lose it, my late stepfather most likely had it when he was still alive. If you've kept up with my posts from the past as well on Bubblews, you'll know my stepfather and I weren't on good terms). Anyway, I needed to help my mom get a new ID...that day. With it being such short notice, I didn't have time to make an appointment for her. Because of that, we ended up spending over 2 hours at the DMV! Needless to say I wasn't happy! Neither was my mom. She was absolutely miserable. I felt so bad for her. With the condition she is in, she shouldn't have had to wait around like that. (It was hard on me as well, with being a mom and working long hours at my previous job.) Unfortunately, the DMV doesn't make exceptions for anybody...even the elderly. Still, we got it done...or so I thought. A few months later my mom's caregiver (a new one) sent me a message saying that she needs my mom's ID for a doctor's appointment. Perplexed, I messaged her back asking her "doesn't my mom have it there?" Nope. So, I ended up calling DMV. When I finally got through to a live operator, I asked her if my mom's ID had ever been sent, but she couldn't give out that information. Apparently that information is privileged and is only given out to the person that the ID is issued to. Great. I explained the situation, but the most she could let me know was that the photo was "pending". (Pending?!? I don't know how that could be seeing that the guy at the DMV took her picture...twice.) She added that she would forward a request to the manager so that they could further assist me. However, the manager never called me. Not that it matters. I figured as much (it's the DMV, after all! lol) I took matters into my own hands and decided to go back to the DMV with my mom. This time I made an appointment though! I also brought my youngest with me so he could help me keep an eye on my mom as she tends to wander. I also made sure that the picture actually took. Now I'm just waiting for it to arrive, which should be any day, seeing as we did this at the beginning of this month. As much as I love my mom, I sure hope that I don't have to go through that again anytime soon! So, how has your experience been when going to the DMV? Hopefully it's been better than mine.

Ugh! I cringe thinking being there for 2 hours and having to go back there again. It's been a while since I've gone, but the last experience wasn't so bad. My daughter was in school and I just had the little one with me - it was maybe a mere 15 minute wait - there happened to be not too people on that particular morning. But as we left, the lines got way longer - I'm glad we got there when we did! Glad that whole thing got straightened out for your mom!

Unfortunately the ID hasn't arrived yet, so it isn't all straightened out just yet.

@sacmom Argh! Why does it feel like some people just don't do their jobs right? It's so oober frustrating - especially when you are having to pay for their mistakes!

It is a bit different here. The driving license is given to you (was, since it has changed 2 or 3 years ago for new driving licenses) for life, but we have a mandatory ID card which is valid 15 years and replaces a passport in Europe and a few other countries. I lost mine last year and I asked for another one. I downloaded a form online and the only place where I had to queue was at my town hall during about 10 mn. They verified that everything needed was in the file (the form, photos, a proof of residence in the town), took a fingerprint of my index finger, and they gave me a personal internet link to the government department to follow the fabrication of the ID card. However the government server was always down for this service and I never got any info. About 2 weeks later the town hall messaged me that my ID card was ready and that I had to come to get it. I went to the town hall and 5 mn later I had my ID card.

Even though you had a bit of a delay, that doesn't sound too bad.

@sacmom The delay varies. In Summer, when a lot of people need an ID card to go to a foreign country it can take a month. I asked for mine last October. It takes quite a long time, but you are not queuing a lot for administrative formalities.

@topffer A month still isn't too bad. My mom and I have been waiting for her ID for 5 months now and she's not even going to a foreign country! lol

I can honestly say I hate going to the DMV. It has been a pain since I moved back to Ohio. When I first moved back and was trying to get everything switched over. I called to see what I needed. I arrived and was sent home three times to get something else. Yes, three times. One thing that really upset me was a copy of my marriage. Which i heard them say they had a couple of already. I was miffed. needless to say it took two days to get everything switched over. When the lady looked at the vehicle I had at the time, when she was done. She handed the paper to my friend. Not me. Which I complained about that too. I hate going there.

I hate the DMV and I believe you should be able to do EVERYTHING online or through the mail . The only thing you should ever be required to go in there for - would be your ORIGINAL ID card or ORIGINAL license. After you have an original in the system, regardless of when you applied for and received it, you should be able to just get a replacement mailed to you by filling out something online or mailing something to them. This would decrease all sorts of trouble and nobody would have to make appts or wait, or drive there. this would save time and money - for everybody!

As much as I love that idea, I don't see the DMV ever doing that. They want all the money that they can get! lol

The last time I went to the dmv it was a breeze. I was the first one there and I got through with everything before anyone else arrived. Now other times in the past have been horrible.

The last time with my wasn't so bad. We were practically the only ones there! We were in an out in no time at all. However my mom has a difficult time walking, so it was still hard on her.

I am very sorry to hear about your mother's dementia and problems with DMV. is Bubblews still paying you? They stopped paying me about a year ago and owe me $300 for past redemptions.

Thank you. Last I saw they were. However, my last payout was back in December. I'm nowhere near payout now, so I cannot say for sure.

I don't like going to the DMV either, as it seems whenever i take a number it is so high that it seems I have to wait way to long before my number is called. They are at the bottome of the totem pole and my number is at the top. LOL. It is always busy and hard to find a time when they aren't so I just deal with it, especially when I have to renew my license as it has to be done, so I just wait it out. I usually take something to do so I am not bored. Take care , have a great day, and happy mylotting.
