What a difference a year makes....

Last year on the 29th of August, (my birthday) I landed at Heathrow in the UK and began the epic journey through Britain that I had been longing to make, and writing about making for years. It did not disappoint. I have over a thousand pics, LOTS of memories and solid friendships of my time there. I can hardly wait to go back, but that's a wish for another time. THIS year, I was looking forward to spending my birthday on a camping trip with my sons, biological, step and adopted, and their children. This morning my hubs and I reached a difficult, but mutual decision for private reasons, that we could not make the trip. I had to email my boys and let them know. It has been a terrible morning for me as a result and now, this year I know I will be spending my birthday alone as the hubs will stay at work. (He works away from home) What a difference a year makes.....

So sorry to hear that you'll miss out on the trip you looked forward to, and that you'll be alone on your birthday. But you've been able to achieve one dream of your life by going to England and that's something many people don't manage to do.

I have never been to England and really want to go very soon. Did you travel to the North and see the moors? I would to travel to Haworth were the Bronte sisters lived.

I travelled all over by train and yes, did go through Haworth. Couldn't very well pass up seeing the home of such classics! Yorkshire is so different to the Cotswolds which were my favorite place. I'm SUCH a tourist! lol Here's a pic of the Bronte Family Home...a museum just outside of Haworth Village.

@pauliek I set up an itinerary before I left home. Did tons of research and made three critical decisions before I left. 1. I bought a Brit Rail Pass. That allowed me to go anywhere (even Scotland) by rail and get on and off the train wherever and whenever I wanted. They mailed the pass to my home so I had it before I left. 2. I bought an Oyster Pass for transport around London (subways and buses) before I left too.3. I used Hotels.com to pre-book my hotels for cities I knew I would spending more than one day/night in. They have a great selection for every budget and the reviews are spot on. I didn't take any cash with me, just used my credit card and bank debit card. Easy peasy. It was not a cheap trip, but food was reasonable. I was there for 12 days and it cost me, total about $3K.

@sparkofinsanity While you were travelling through England, did you find it very expensive? How much can I expect to pay for lodging and food?

So sorry that you will not be able to go on the trip. For what it is worth I do hope that your birthday goes much better than you expect it to.

Thanks Kevin. I've been a wannabe Brit ever since I read my first Agatha Christie novel at 14!

Sounds like you had such an amazing trip! Perhaps your birthday can still be celebrated, not "on" the day, but on a future date. Sometimes our family just can't get together - we are all doing different things all the time, and we will celebrate things much later well after the fact. But in the meantime, you can go do something just for YOU on your birthday. Happy early birthday!!
