WHY Is This News?

I'm watching the baseball game on ESPN, and they're talking about some minor-league baseball player who "came out" as "the first openly gay baseball player in the major leagues." He's a minor league player, not a major leage player, but that aside..... WHY IS THIS NEWS????? Last year a couple of country music singers "came out" on the same day, and they got more news coverage for that than for any of their albums (neither of whom had actually released one in years). This isn't 1955, it's 2015. I don't think anyone cares. I don't understand why someone feels a need to call a press conference and tell us what he/she does in his/her bedroom. Worse, I don't see why the media feels compelled to cover it as much as (or in some cases more than) a presidential news conference.

It's not news but everyone rushes to cover it so they can be seen as modern and fair and really hip and better than anyone who isn't all those things. It's ridiculous.

@GreatMartin I just don't see what it has to do with sports broadcasting. For me, it has nothing to do with the fact that it is his being gay that they are covering. For me, it's about the press deciding which issues or attributes make you more newsworthy OUTSIDE of the actual sport or profession you are engaged in. It's news because they decide it's news. Which is what I said. They are making news these days, not reporting it. And that is across the board, in regards to every issue. I am tired of the news being sorted and prioritized according to any list of important issues they want to be seen covering.

@Rollo1 Easy solution--read the news listen to the news you only want to hear/read. EVERY TIME anyone mentions their wife/husband/kid/ grandkids in a news report they are prioritizing nongays. Let's censor talking about anyone's family or life or even better become a reporter and report on what you want or don't want to.

It definitely isn't news but hey, media thinks it still SELLS so they cover it anyway. A definite head scratcher for me... I guess ESPN wanted to know what 'bat' he prefers to hold...

@GreatMartin I will say that members of the LGBT community are getting unfairly treated in the Philippines but strides are being made to educate the masses about equal rights and protection. Some sectors are learning to accept members of the LGBT community here in the country.
