..but I have!
Recently, I've been researching pencil sharpeners (and, believe me, they do vary in quality) and came across a review on YouTube by an American chap who was testing quite a few sharpeners, then letting us know which one he thought was best.
Anyway, his personal favourite was an M+R two-hole brass sharpener made in Germany. It was round and he said it was like "sharpening butter" it was so easy to use. Now, I didn't want the two-hole version as I don't use jumbo pencils so, to save a bit of money, searched for a one-holed version..and found one on Cult Pens. It has a more traditional wedge shape but was still made of brass.
Hoorah!
It arrived earlier today and I can honestly say that I've sharpened a whole stash of Faber Castell Polychromos pencils (they sound dear but they're only 99p each) plus some Derwent Inktense and Coloursoft varieties and NONE of the ends broke on me. I've never experienced this before (and there are some impressive pointy ends to work with now) and I've thanked the reviewer for pointing me in the right direction of a decent pencil sharpener because I was sick of having 3 goes before I could use each pencil. As the name suggests, Derwent Coloursofts need sharpening a fair bit anyway but to only have to sharpen them once, well, it's going to make huge a difference to my mood!

I'm more relieved that it works like it should, to be honest. I agree with you, people should get more excited over the little things in life. I certainly do. This little beauty will save me money in the long run!

Home appliances..yeh, I can identify with that! Our Zanussi washer/dryer is second-hand but boy, is it better than our previous Hotpoint Aquarius or what. It lights up and everything, I love it lol. Oh, and it washes on 30°C, something my previous machine couldn't achieve.
