Back to School

Summer break is ending and I've been reading many 'back to school' posts. They talk about buying school supplies, first day of school, and even going back to school as mature students. The posts remind me of such time with my own kids. Year after year, I was always so excited to be involved with their 'back to school' activities. Naturally, as they get older and more independent, I become less and less involved with their school life. It's a good thing, I know; but I miss those times in the beginning of the school year when my kids still need me to get ready for school. Time flies by too fast...

I agree. Time really does fly. My children haven't gone back to school yet. There is still 3 weeks left of summer vacation. September 8th is when they head back to school. I just bought new backpacks. Now I just need to concentrate on school supplies. I tend to wait on that though because half the teachers don't need all the stuff on the lists that are given out and they need other things that are not on the list. So I usually wait. I do send them to school with the basics of course. Paper, pencil, folders, notebooks. Stuff like that. God bless.

@sishy7 oh my. do you have to pay for the uniform? Right now my children have decent clothes to start the year in. But when I can I will them a couple of new outfits each. God bless.

@taramarie39 Yes, the uniform is not free... And even if they go to same high school, the uniform is different for lower and upper (junior and senior year) high school students.

I'm so glad I haven't seen as many back to school posts as you talk about seeing- I don't even want to think about going back to school in September! Of course, I am exciting for all the shopping I will have to do before then.. :)

Ah, you're on the other side of me... I know, I could see myself getting more excited about new school year than my kids, the students who actually have to go back to school.

As you say this is a good thing that they develop a degree of independence over the years. At least you have the satisfaction of knowing that you contributed to them attaining that level of maturity.

Yeah, I want to pat myself on the back for that, but can't really do it... Besides, they really are good kids so they make my job very easy .

@sishy7 This does relate to the same source. The fact that they are such good children is partly due to their upbringing and family environment, so you deserve that pat on the back. One easy way to acquire a pat on the back is to lie under a cow.

@lbrookes14 I imagine she's your sweet princess then... Yeah, I have 4 boys and my only sister has 2 boys. So my poor mom has only daughters and no grand-daughter . But I guess after what she's been through with me and my sister, she loves having only grand-sons.

I only have one to get ready for school now, and it's a little easier on the budget. But it won't be long before he's done high school. Time certainly does fly.

Yep - the kids started school today! Now I don't have to tend to my oldest as much - she knows the ropes. My little one is actually quite independent himself - but of course mom wants to be there just in case and for extra hugs - hee hee. I love buying school supplies - in fact I'll be leaving shortly to go buy my own stash of school supplies - it's sale time - ha ha!

The smell of new books and the determination to keep them that way till the end only to see dogs ears is one thing I will never forget.

Yeah, I remember helping my kids put some plastic book covers on; but in general my boys were not too neat and tidy with their school books.

Ha ha... I had those first day of school moments too when my kids were small. Luckily, I remember it was always brief as they'd soon be playing with their school friends.
