seems like the only way I could get continuous coverage would be to pay the $1700

Early July when I knew I was changing jobs, I immediately asked the ex to put the kids on his insurance, and I applied for Blue Shield through a local agent. The ex putting the kids on was no problem other than me providing proof as soon as I had it, but Blue Shield wouldn't do anything before I got them the proof. Well, Health Net, my most recent employer, refused to send the proof until after 7/31 when my insurance expired. But Blue Shield didn't have to make my new coverage effective until 9/1 because they didn't get the proof until August. So in other words, there was no way to avoid having a gap in coverage unless I paid Health Net $1700 for Cobra coverage, which would be for me AND the kids, which I didn't need, because the kids were on their dad's insurance. This insurance thing, HIPAA and the ACA, still need some ironing out, imho
PS to add insult to injury, and contrary to instructions, Blue Shield took the premium out of my checking instead of my savings. Fortunately, I had funds to cover it.

I remember those days too, but someone thought they better 'fix' it..
And there's no competition.. not allowed across state lines.. works out so well for the insurance companies.. so they have us over a barrel. If there was competition, they'd have to compete with each other for our business, keeping prices down and coverage up..

There are a few improvements, but I"m not sure they balance out the things that aren't as good.

I really don't know much about others, but our insurance has gone up by a lot and the coverage has gone down.. It's sad to hear of so many troubles for so many concerning health care and also insurance..

The insurance thing needs some serious ironing out. We are pretty lucky with what we have. The longer hubby stays with his company, the more of his insurance the company pays for, so we're not paying a lot so I can't complain. But he wants to switch jobs and it worries me. Things are tight as is, if we have to pay more for insurance, and he'll be making less because there's no way for him to find another job making as much as he makes now (but he's miserable and hates it and has for a long time, so we have to make the sacrifice) so I'm really worried about affording health care... but thanks to Obama we can't really afford not to have health insurance because his fees are more expensive than the insurance!
