When they don't answer...

My brother called me tonight to inquire whether or not I had spoken to my sister this evening. I hadn't. He had tried to call her and got no answer. We both felt concerned because she is not doing very well right now and suffering a lot of ill effects of the treatment she is receiving for cancer.
Thankfully, while we were on the phone, she called him back. That's a relief for both of us. She lives alone and of course, we worry.
When I call someone and think they should answer the phone but they don't, I can imagine a million reasons that they didn't answer, and none of them good. It drives me crazy to call my children's cell phones and have them not answer. I used to tell my daughter: "I don't pay for a cell phone so you can be in constant contact with your friends. I pay for it so I can contact whenever I want and if I can't, then I won't pay for it".
Is there someone in your life about whom you worry if you can't reach them by phone? A child away at school? An elderly parent?

Our kids are still too young (we think) for a phone to take to school. I don't worry so much about them as I'm sure they would be allowed to reach me through the office phones if needed, but still it's not like I have direct contact with them. With kids, so much is worrisome!

I got The Boy a cell phone when he started walking to school. He walked alone so often he would call me and talk to me until he got to a spot near the school - he didn't want other kids seeing him talking to him mom on the phone. But our conversations helped him transition to a more independent time of life.

My neighbor 87 who lives alone often sleeps soundly while listening to music. Her daughters call me after calling many times and when there is no response.. Since I have a key to the apartment .. I have walked in many times to find her snoring. LOL but the fear in the daughter's voices often gets to me. She has too many ailments to mention, but is one courageous woman I admire.
