Does your dog enjoy car rides?

Years ago, my in-laws had a pup that dreaded car rides. So much so, that it made him terribly nervous. However, I had no idea just how nervous he would get... Back then, I had worked at a veterinary hospital, so I was able to get discounts on vaccinations and whatnot. Since I worked there, I figured that I would take him to get his shots. It'd make it easier that way, or so I thought... As I was driving down the road, my in-laws dog would howl and cry. And then it happened... He farted! Nor just once or twice, but throughout the entire trip! Yikes! Oh, the smell was absolutely horrid! He had some of the worst smelling gas that I've ever smelled! And I've smelt a lot in my time! lol I wanted to roll down all the windows, but as they were manual and I was driving I could only roll down the one that was next to me. Needless to say, it didn't help much. So, I had to endure that horrible smell until I got to work. My last chihuahua wasn't like that at all. She loved car rides, especially when we'd go to the park. As for my current chihuahua, she's indifferent to them. What about you? Do you have a dog or other pet that go on car rides? Do they like them or are they like my in-laws dog? lol

Remus loves them, but he doesn't get to go for rides too often. I'm not really the type to take the dog everywhere, because he's not welcome in a lot of places and I hate to leave him locked in the car, no matter what the weather. There have been times I've taken him just to go pick up the kids from school, just so he gets to go for the ride.

Aw, well at least he gets to go for the ride. I need to start doing that with my chihuahua before she starts hating them.

She jumps right in the car - but really doesn't like riding much. She paces the whole ride, whethr it's 10 mins. of 8 hours.

My Chih-mix Tinkerbell doesn't mind them at all. She would just lay down or look out the window. I even bought her a doggie car seat!!! Haha. She loves it! And people get a kick out of seeing her too :) My mom's Lab on the other hand...a car is just a torture box. He cowers in the back seat whenever we're moving. And then when we come to a red light he'll sit up and look out the window. Once we start moving again he drops like a sack of rocks! Haha

Oh no, that is terrible! I have a doggie car seat for my chihuahua as well. It's by Snoozer. What brand do you have?

@sacmom I'm not sure what brand we have, but snoozer doesn't sound familiar.

I've never owned a dog but I do remember vividly bringing our (now) sadly deceased Flo-Jo from Blackpool to Carlisle, a near 100 mile one-way trip! Fortunately, the basket we carried her in was designed for 2 so she had loads of room to move around in, plus the fact I decided to sit next to her on the back seat rather than at the front like I usually do. She was very good during the journey itself as it was dark (although cats can see in the dark, obviously) but, on the whole, she didn't mind the journey at all, bless 'er!

@Janey1966 I feel ya. I had to put my chihuahua down in January. She was only 3 years old. It was terribly hard on my family and I.

@sacmom I'm not looking forward to the year's anniversary of her being put down (17th September) but I know, deep down, it was the right thing to do. The saddest part is that she was only 7 at the time. Usually any cats I've owned have lived until at least 12 or beyond. We do have a collage of photos in the shape of a canvas print on the wall so it still feels like she's here. In fact, it's one of the reasons why we can't face moving house, apart from the realisation we can't afford to.

I have no dog, but I see that the golden retriever of my niece loves car rides. She is the first to jump inside when my niece open the car door.

Hahaha! Mine would probably do the same, but with her being small, it makes it kind of hard, so I put her inside of the car.

@sacmom this is the first dog I have owned that didn't like cars... I mean I had a dog that used to sit in the basket of my bike... German Shepard and it was a big basket. She was a great dog.

@sacmom My Chihuahua mix loves going on car rides. He insists to go everywhere. At times when running to the store. I take one of my teens with me. Either my teen or I sit in the car til the other comes out with items. That way my pup can go on a car ride. As I never leave my pup alone in a vehicle.

We have not taken Princess in a long time. She used to like them. We may start taking her out periodically to get her used to it, before "the move"

One dog loved to ride in the car, the other one associated it with going to the vet and the groomer and was less easily convinced.

My dogs only ride in the dar when I take them to the groomers, and it is funny, but they seem to know where I am going too. They know when I get there, and what I am there for. I guess dogs are smarter than I give them sometimes.

My dogs LOVE car rides, but my moms dog HATES them. She shakes and drools and usually ends up getting sick before the ride is over. :( But sometimes I take my dog on a car ride just to relieve his boredom.

Aw, that's too bad about your mom's dog. If only all dogs liked car rides, it'd make it a lot easier when they have to go on them. I need to start doing that as well. My little chihuahua doesn't get out enough! lol

I currently don't own a dog, but most of the ones I have in the past don't like the car ride. I now have every type of animal except a dog lol. But none of them tend to like them but my one cat, and one guinea pig. They will sit on my knee and watch out the window.

Oh how funny! I had a dog once who would get sick every time he rode in the car. The dog I have now loves to ride but she does get a little anxious.

@sacmom Bella does really good in the car but she pants a lot and we have the air on right now. She even pants in the winter so I think she does it because she is anxious. If we are in the car for a while, she will eventually stop and lay down.

That is a funny story. All my dogs except my last Toy pom loved car rides. The toy pom would be so excited and get in and sit on my seat right in front. she would be happily looking out lolling her tongue.. but within ten minutes she would throw up allover you. I never took her on long rides. She always wanted the windows open, that was another problem with her.
