Yes, it's true, today is August 25th - I saw that on Facebook and started laughing wondering how many people would leave sarcastic comments - so far none....what a shock! We don't do a lot of Christmas shopping - just a few gifts, so it's not a big deal and I don't make a big deal out of shopping. Back years ago it was always keeping up with the Jonses and see who buys the biggest/most expensive gifts - glad to be out of that rat race. We are 800 miles from family, so we have our own quiet holidays and love it.

We don't have family left, but we've got 5 kids. Most of them are still young, 2 of them still believe in Santa. We don't go buy them expensive game systems or anything like that, but we do want them to have a nice Christmas. Most years hubby and I will not buy gifts for each other so that we can put all our spare money into getting stuff for the kids. Just a few moments ago he and I were planning out what bills we're paying with our upcoming paychecks, and when I'll get my paychecks as I'm paid bi-weekly. That's when we noticed there are 5 Fridays in October, so he will get 5 paychecks and I'll get 3. We figure we'll do a chunk of our shopping then with the extra cash.

Christmas should be all about the kids when it comes to gifts and it's good that you plan and that you know your limits. Kids today get too much stuff - so keeping things simple I think is a good thing.

It really is hard to believe, that it is almost here again. My oh my, the year has gone so fast. Once I get up in the morning, and start my day, then poof it is gone before I know it. As far as Christams is concerned, I only have five to buy for, and I just mostly give money, as that iseasier, and we can all use it. Now, I get gifts, and that is fine, but I wouldn't mind having money too. My family is only a little over 20 miles away, so it only takes a half hour to get there.

My husband and I only recently started buying for each other - when we first moved south we lived on savings until SS kicked in so there wasn't extra money. Now we buy things, but usually something we know the other person really needs/wants.

@AbbyGreenhill I am divorced, but my ex and I do give to each other. He will give me money, and I buy him what he needs and will use. It really is much better that way, than buying something that will never get used.

@rosekiss When my parents were alive they knew better than to buy me things that I didn't want or need, they always asked for some suggestions. That way I got what I wanted.

When I read the title of this discussion I was very shocked. I counted out the months left on my fingers to make sure you didn't make a mistake lol It seems like 2015 just started yesterday. When in reality the beginning of a new year is slowly creeping up on us all. A new year where we will ask ourselves what on earth has happened to all the time. I totally agree with the small gifts kind of Christmas. The true beauty of Christmas is getting to spend time with your loved one/s. Even if your family is 800 miles away they'll be in your heart and you can spend the rest of the time with the family you live with even if that is only one person or if that is friends. I think the whole point of buying gifts is to show them how much you know them and know what they'd like. Buying expensive gifts isn't the point it's about giving them something they would enjoy perhaps a small gift that shows a private joke the two of you have. Homemade gifts are better since they require more time and effort. Perhaps a scrapbook of all the memories you shared with them throughout the year or their favourite baked cookies. Don't forget to make and write a card filled with words expressing how much they mean to you. Have a great rest of the year and happy Christmas
