Has anyone found a Genealogy Site where you can acquire information on ancestors?

I have tried on two different sites but have come up with a blank. Could it be because they came to the US from Europe so the records are not in the US. Just wondering if someone has good luck finding ancestors.

ancestory .com, roots .com, these have some free access - some paid access.

@mythociate True. You do have to input it. However, it can also help you find family from it as well.

@sacmom And you can search it to see if a relative started your family-tree in the 'ancient origins' of the Internet

I joined that, but I don't know if that's so much for 'looking-up information' as it is for 'inputting the information you already have.' (But I'm not sure; I only just now started, and dove right into starting my tree rather than 'seeing if it's already there' )

I did my family tree long ago by going to local archives before the internet era, but now quite all the civil and parish registries older than 100 years old have been digitized and are available online, and it is easy (as long as you can read old handwriting) to do a family tree at home.

But you see the problem is I need to find information from another country so don't know if they will have that or not and if i could find handwriting it would not be in English.

@Marcyaz how far back did ya get? If you got to the ship they came over on.... then you will need to look at the country they came from, including the port they got on the boat at.

I never tried doing that. So I couldn't say anything. I would have to assume that there should be some information for those that came to america somewhere. Unless maybe that their names were changed for some reason.

I think some peoples names might have been misspelled when they arrived on these shores but in my family the spelling is still the same I have found.

@inertia4 Yes, and I understand that some names being hard to pronounce were not entered correctly. I did find my grandparents first and last names are correct in the roots site.

@Marcyaz Well, like in the movie the Godfather. Vito's real name was Andolini. Not Corleone. Things like that happened back then.

Ancestry is the best one Marcy. I was reading reviews the other day as to which site was the best and that one topped the list. Though I did not have to do it even tho I know my Mom and Dad are both direct immigrants, so I know my heritage, way back. Good Luck if you decide to do it.

Thanks Ocean, I of course tried that one but had no results at all. Will try another one like root.com that Madison suggested.

@TiarasOceanView on root.com I have found the year of my grandfathers birth or close to it and my grandmothers also. That is a start at least since I know my grandmother passed in her 80's and my grandfather was 98 and in a nursing home.

@simone10 Yes, I found some information on the roots site but haven't tried the tribal one as of yet as I haven't had the time to do so but hoping it has information also. Good that now you again want to continue with your search and this discussion has brought it back to your mind. Good Luck in your search and let us know how it goes.

@Marcyaz Your discussion has helped me. At one time I was researching my Dad's side of the family and got stumped because they came from England so I stopped. Now I want to continue and there are some really good places listed here in the comments.

My dad has an ancestry.com account. My step mom is also a genealogist. We've found out a lot by talking with our older relatives. Oh and Ebay. Most people wouldn't think of it, but my dad actually found an old picture that just happened to have his father in it. They have all kinds of old photographs and you never know who might be in them.

One problem with talking to an older relative is I have none, no family member old enough who knows any more than I do which is next to nothing.
