How long should you nurse for?

August 25, 2015 9:32pm CST
I am currently nursing my 3 month old. My goal is to get to at least 12 months of nursing her. In your opinion, at what age is it still appropriate to nurse a child? I am thinking by 2 the child should be done, but I know some will go longer. I think by 12 months I will definitely be done nursing but maybe I would still pump to give her the nutrients.

Nurse as long as she wants and you are comfortable with it. I have nursed my babies for a year and a half. It is a beautiful way of bonding and nurturing your child.

I remember that the rule in my country is to nurse the baby for the first 6 months. Then the doctors suggest to start giving the baby other kind of food to add more vitamins and nutrients. Anyway they suggest not to go over 12 months.

Really? From what I've seen as well as heard, it's at least 12 months. It's even recommended to go beyond the 2 year mark. It's been that way for quite some years now here in the US.

@sacmom My brother is a doctor, I remember he told me about those suggestion when her daughter was born. It is possible that different countries have different habits.

@sacmom I think I saw something somewhere that said the average weaning time for Americans is only 4 months where other countries is 4 years! I think that is quite a big difference. I guess we will play it by ear. I am just afraid for when she gets teeth!

My opinion is that there is no right answer. The most important thing to do is to nurse as long as you and your child are comfortable with and enjoying it. For some babies, that's a year and for some it's three years! Do what feels best!

I feel that 6 months is more than enough because by then you would have introduced semi solids and solids but one year should be the outer limit....

I think til about six months. Any longer and you'll have another Norman Bates on your hands.
