So I am looking at wireless signal booster. The model I have considered simply plugs into an outlet somewhere between the router and the wireless devices. It is supposed to merely boost the signal so that other areas of the house get faster wifi. I wonder if anyone has used one of these and if you have had any success. The model I am considering is a reasonably priced one, kind of mid-range. But even so, I don't want to waste my money if it doesn't really help.

I have never used such an item because ,y signal is good enough to reach the whole house. Nevertheless, there is no reason for undue concern because this is simply a unit that acts as a relay station. Providing that the booster is within the signal range of the router it will receive the signal and then transmit it, thus bridging the gap in between.
However, if you are only dealing with 1 maqchine it may be worthwhile considering a powerline adapter. This plugs directly into the mains and carries the signal around the electrical circuit to the desired point.

@Asylum The connections is rather slow -- 50 Kbps to 350 Kbps so there are some cons in using powerline adapters...
