The Market is Open

My new home town has about five hundred people. It does not have very many businesses downtown, especially that are open long hours. People have asked where I will shop. Our timing is perfect, the new Flint Hills Market and Bakery opened last week. Here is a link to the Facebook page. They take custom orders for pies and serve other delectable goodies freshly made. Most days of the week they have deli sandwiches from 11 am to 2 pm. They are in an historic building, the opera house. Opera houses in small towns did not necessarily have operas but any performing group on stage. This one always had a business on the main street level. That is where the market and bakery are. I love the use they have made of old furnishings to display goods.. Hubby and I went in to check out the prices. It has more items in a larger variety than a convenience store, and the prices are not as high as a C-store. There are enough things in stock that I could go get stuff to make a quick dinner or dessert. If I was missing a certain basic item I could probably find it there. This is less than a mile from my new house. I could walk. You know I will be doing some business in my new home town.

I have 2 problems--I am looking to have a special cake made for my 20th Leap Year birthday and in a big city like Fort Lauderdale I can't find a bakery that makes them--I did price one at Publix supermarket and they want $600!! Next problem--being new I have a lot of questions in spite of reading the various sections of 'help' here--I thought we weren't allowed to give out URLs for businesses---right or wrong? Help.

You should not be giving url's for things you profit from. Like if I owned the bakery. My daughter-in-law does wonderful cakes but I am not sure how well they would ship from Kansas. You must be wanting a really big cake!!!

@GreatMartin That is a clever way to problem solve. A really good cake should be served fresh.

@GardenGerty Something simple--4 tiers--2 chocolate, 2 carrot cake--and the dates of the last 20 Leap Years--that's all!!! I buy most gifts from zestofmemphis.com but they won't ship cakes--I am ever inviting them to m y party hoping they will drive the cake here!!

I don't think we have 500 people in our county!

Wow, I thought I lived in a sparse rural area. It can be very calm sometimes, and maybe sometimes lonesome. What kind of industry or occupations are in your county?

@GardenGerty This is a farming community, not much of anything else.

I love it when businesses use old buildings as a site of their new store or business. It is high time that we give respect to these establishments and give these a new lease on life. How are the pies and deli sandwiches?

I did not get to try them, it was closing time when we were there. Next week if we are there during noon we can try the sandwiches. Pie is good any time. I liked some of their fresh produce prices.

@GardenGerty reading about pies and sandwiches makes me hungry. Wait a minute and let me grab a sandwich.

I certainly am not bored. It will be time to think about things to plant again.

@GardenGerty Thinking of things to plant in your garden should certainly keep you busy for a while.

500 people in the town, I guess it won't be long until you know them all.

It sounds like it doesn't it? I have been going to a few of the community activities. Some of them attract people from a long ways away.

Gerty I live in a town of about 5000 but the local store here is way overpriced so we have to go about 30 or 45 minutes to a larger town to do our shopping. You are so fortunate that you could even walk to those new stores in your town, wish I could.

It's nice that you have something so convenient and reasonable. That will save you making trips to a supermarket when you just need a few things.

It is a store with personality and I really hope it does well. The next closest store is ten miles, then twenty, then thirty, just depending on which way you want to go. I might even be encouraged to walk to this one.

I live downtown in shanghai, very convenient for shopping. Near our community, there are lots of restaurants, vegetable and fruit shops, clothing shops, etc. Recently, express delivery services are opened, which helps a lot for the elderly. They are linked with supermarkets, and private owners, to give good price and door to door delivery. A lot of young couples do not bother to cook after work. They just order via telephone.
