She is outside in the backyard and seems to be really interested in something so I went out to see what it was, it was a frog. I took the frog and put it on the other side of the fence quite a ways out.
Knowing her she would have caught it and been playing with it.
I don't want my dogs or their friends to play with frogs because I have heard they can cause problems to a dog. Does anyone know anything on this subject.
The only thing I know is the frog population has been declining in the past few years.
Any information you have would be appreciated...Thanks

Oh no Marcy!
I had to look it up but I found this link about it:
I have heard that it is the toxins that can cause problems.
Toad venom toxicity is relatively common in dogs. Being natural predators, it is common for dogs to catch toads in their mouths, thereby coming into contact with the toad's toxin, which the toad releases when it feels threatened. This highly toxic defense

Some frogs and toads are toxic to dogs. Not all of them of course. If you don't know which ones, to be safe, teach your dogs not to mess with any of them.

Hello @rusty2rusty Yes, there are some species of frogs that are toxic. They have a kind of sticky substance on their skin and that contains the toxic content.
I would second your opinion to train the dogs not to mess with frogs. In fact, I think there is no teaching required. Dogs normally dont mess with frogs - at least the one I had, never did.

When my cats have caught toads or frogs they tend to foam at the mouth. It is not good for the pets, but I do not know if there is a long term problem.

Frogs are not safe for pets as they pee the moment they are touched.

Most frogs in the US are not a poison danger to dogs but can carry bacteria that can infect your do and ultimately you. All toads are a danger to dogs because they emit a poisonous froth when they die that, if ingested or absorbed by your dog, can be fatal.

Thanks DW for that site about the toads, I will be calling my vet in the morning and find out more on this. My dog did not try to eat a toad she just wanted to play with it and fortunately it was under a pallet she kept looking at the pallet and moving around like something was under it and yes something was under it - a toad well I got rid of it immediately so no harm done.

I am fond of dogs, but frogs are a completely different story.

Sorry, I know nothing about frogs harming dogs. You did the right thing if they can harm dogs.

There are several kinds of frogs capable of killing an elephant and a man, because these toads emit toxins - Dendrobates tinctorius.
