In India especially in the southern parts oiling one's hair is a must , a tradition and a practice that has always been there.I oil and massage my hair once a week since I cannot do it more often than that. Both men and women normally oil their hairs during weekends and this is supposed to be good for the hair because the natural oils get depleted due to weather and the roots don't stay firm..
Do you oil your hair and feel that it is beneficial for the health and growth of your hair ?

@SIMPLYD - I am sure your salon lady lacks knowledge about your hair..
You do not like to apply oil in your hair is another matter.

Probably they put too much of oil into my hair when I was a baby. In all seriousness, I have oily hair and in case I dont shampoo every alternate day, I get a sticky feeling on the head. In contrast, my wife has dry hair and she has to use hair oil almost every alternate day.
The other big problem I have is that I cant stand the smell of most of these hair oils. The two biggest advantages of using a good hair oil is - 1,. You dont have dandruff and also 2. You dont have too much of hairfall. I know these two benefits for sure.

LOL, Most Indian families do that , put a lot of oil in babies hair since it is washed off daily ! Yes sid thats very true, No dandruff and less hair fall...I never buy oil from outside because of the strong smell...Since we have coconuts at home we get enough coconut oil for our use and I boil the oil along with hibiscus flowers and crushed amla, strain and bottle it...

I apply oil on my hair on regular basis. I think coconut oil is best or may be almond oil (if it is pure). Without oil, I feel that my hair are rough and shoddy. After applying oil on my hair, I do not need to comb it again and again. Also, grey hair do not surface once you have applied oil, instead hair looks black/brown (whatever is the natural colour of our hair). When I use shampoo to wash my hair, I leave it without oil.

@kiran8 - Yes, fast lifestyle makes us do less things. May be herbal shampoos have less amount of detergents.

Hi Kiran. I used to always apply oil, coconut or otherwise to my hair earlier in years.
Now, however, my hair has become much thinner due to I dont know what?
So I avoid oil as it lays my hair down too much, my hair is too thin to take it anymore.
It is a good practice if you have the beautiful thick hair.

Tiara thats really sad to know..I too use Coconut oil.In fact we make a special Herbal oil at home by heating coconut oil and adding red hibiscus flowers and leaves and crushed gooseberries into it.Later once it is cool, I filter it and store it in bottles. It has cooling effect and stops hair loss !

@TiarasOceanView Hey thats great Tiara, you must try it, it really is helpful...It also keeps your scalp free of dandruff and any other infection you may get.But you have to make sure that each time the oil is completely washed away from the scalp..

@kiran8 Really? I wonder if this would help me. Although where to get gooseberries here..I would have to hunt far and wide..they only have in the can kind. Hibiscus maybe I could get the oil or tincture of it. I might try this thank you Kiran!
*I just looked on the Amazon and they have the Indian Gooseberry Dry Powder! YAY

I don't like to apply oil to my hair, I just do not feel comfortable with the oily hair. Perhaps it's also because my face is prone to acne, when it's oily, I find it's even easier to have pimples. Hence, I don't like to apply oil to my hair or face.
There are many Indians here, and I heard from them the benefits of applying oil, especially coconut oil. I guess that's why many Indians have beautiful and shiny hair. I don't know about oiling the feet.
I am just too lazy to take much care of my hair, I just leave it plain as it is.

Yes Coconut oil is the best there is for hair and most other herbal oils have coconut oil as their base ,,,Unless you have Dandruff you dont have to worry about the oil aggravating your acne because it is the dandruff that makes it worse ...

Oh really? So that's the reason for oiling hair eh? Hm... I don't oil my hair at all. I know some people do it everyday and it turned their hair brown because of it. I imagine the hair gets cooked whenever they are under the sun.

@kiran8 Oh... well if it's only once a week I think I can handle it as I don't like oily hair. I like to color my hair though.

Here we have a different reason for oiling the hair...since everybody wants to have black shiny hair, they feel oiling the hair keeps its roots well oiled and black especially while going out in the harsh sun..Of course I am not sure what the scientific explanation would be..

Yes I do oil my hair every week. I mix coconut, olive and castor oil in equal proportion and massage my head gently. It has helped me a lot and now I have less hair fall

Dear Kiranji, I apply Shalimar coconut oil in Kolkata. My mother has very long hair. She applies Arnika Plus Hair oil. I think hair requires noursishment. For that oil is the best medicines. Occassionally one can put shampoo on hair.

I don't oil my hair regularly though I believe it's wonderful for your hair. Just laziness I suppose. You inspire me to oil it though. Thank you for sharing.

@Sherwinmrtn Ok, ideally you should keep it on overnight but even a couple of hours before washing it off is good enough !
