Did you know cell phone thefts have gone up recently.
Use a strong password or safe lock on your phone
Use the Find my Phone app on your cell phone
On the back of your phone put a tiny piece of paper with an email address and a phone number so an honest person can contact you.
To back up your photos and videos use Apple's iCloud, Android's Google +, or Microsoft's OneDrive
Your phone has a unique number and you should write it down in case of theft.
It is on your phone or in your settings menuor sometimes it is found on your battery.
You can also dial *#06# it should pop up on your screen.

That is all very interesting. If I ever get a cell phone I will have to check into safety features. I have a land line through my cable company. Am on a contract with them. I asked the rep the other day when I had them on the phone how much my bill would be if I took the phone off. It would only be $20 less.

A cell phone is good to have if you are out and about and need to make a phone call like if you have a mechanical problem or are in an accident or see an accident.
I no longer have a land line phone as all I used to get on them were people trying to sell me something.

@Marcyaz I can't see paying $40 some for a cell phone when I only pa $20 for the land line. I don't make a lot of calls so the land line does fine. A cell phone would be nice but not an expense I can afford at this time.

Maybe sometime when you are in a better financial position you will buy one or not.
Of course each person has their own thoughts on what they want or can afford.

My phone is secure. I have a passcode and other security on it. Will never attach my name or email address. I would rather the phone self destruct first. And I remember either Apple or someone else mention about a self destruct feature. That would be good. That way the phone would be totally useless to a criminal.

Hmm my friends and family would be ecstatic if somebody does steal my pumpkin aka my cellphone. It's kind of small and old and doesn't work all that good but has lot of sentimental valueLike the time i dropped it in the theatre and this really cool guy picked it up for me or the time it crash landed infront of the Lenin biography i was searching the entire library for or maybe....wait a minute i am sensing a pattern hereNo wonder it doesn't work properly ..gaah!

my wife has her lock screen message to say if you find this phone call this # but I doubt she will ever have the problem she always has her phone in the protective case on her person unless she is in the house which we have no visitors so its not likely to happen not impossible but not a big chance either.

You have given useful tips for the cell phone users. Now a days smart phones come with many pre-loaded security features in it, we should be aware of those features so as to protect our cell phone.

This is all very good advice. I do try to keep my phone safe everyday, and when I am home, it is safe. When I go out, I have to be more careful as I don't want anyone try to take it from me. I have an iPhone, and I just don't want anything happening to it, so I am very careful with it.

While in theory phone location software and lock-down mechanisms provided by the manufacturers should keep your phone safe, unfortunately there is quite a quick workaround, which thieves know: it suffices to keep the phone powered off until you can start it in a place with no network coverage.
There, you may re-flash it, removing all original software from it. At least in my country there are many service centers which will (legally) reflash your phone for a fee of some $25-30.

Someone stole my phone when I was a student, inside the university library while I was in the bathroom. This happened a few years ago and I am extremely careful with my belongings since then. I had the chance to watch the security video from the librart after it happened, and that guy was so calm and natural that I wouldn't have seen him if he was stealing from the desk next to me.
I realised that it's very easy for some people to steal and I am careful with my stuff all the time. Those apps are very helpful and I wish I had one installed in my phone then.
