Pain When Exercising

After gaining quite a bit of weight, I've been working pretty hard at losing some. So far, I've managed to lose about 6 pounds. I've been going to the rec center and walking on their indoor track since my body can't handle the heat outside. The problem I keep running into is that after I walk about half a mile, the sides of my lower legs cramp up and get very tight! I end up having to sit down for a few minutes before I can walk anymore. Once that happens, it will happen again about every 4 laps around the small track. Its so painful that I have to stop each time. I wear good shoes and I'm not walking fast at all. So, I don't understand why this is happening. Anyone have any ideas?

You may be lacking some vitamin or something like potassium. I read that eating banana helps leg cramps.

I will have to try taking a potassium supplement. I'm not able to eat bananas - they are a migraine trigger!

This used to happen to myself when i first started cycling many years ago, Your body is used to doing the same thing every day and with you starting to exercise it now has to adapt to this, Maybe you could try doing some leg stretches before you exercise, I think you may need to see a nutritionist as well as if you are not taking in the right amount of vitamins, Protein, Sugars ect, This can have a massive impact on your day to day life Keep up the good work and stay positive

That happens because of the weight. I know the feeling. And sometimes my feet and knees hurt. I had lost lots of weight years ago and felt great. Then I put it back on. Now I don't feel great anymore. But I have been trying to lose it once again. I have been walking more than I was and eating less as well.

I am not sure why this happens. I would suggest some stretching before the workout and between your running. Maybe this an help you with cramps.

I guess it is true. No pain no gain. Believe me I work out also. It does get easier, soon you will find that you can do more with ease. I encourage you to keep it up and you will see the reward of your hard wok.

Ouch sounds painful. I guess with time it should ease but cramps are usually a sign that the body is lacking a mineral or vitamin. Have plenty of water and more potassium in your diet. If it gets worse I would suggest seeking a doctors advice as could be twisted veins.

Do some calf stretches before you start. Things like wall push ups or heel dips off a curb or block. You can try eating an orange may help as well. Gatorade and sports drinks balance your electrolytes or tomato juice or V8. It is not generally safe to take potassium supplements unless a doctor orders them.

My husband was getting major cramps in his legs. The trainer at the gym said he needed to drink more water. It helped a lot.

It's just your muscles trying to get used to the new regime. Work through the pain and eventually it will go away.

On your other discussion - Self Harm - I read that you have fibromyalgia. It might be somewhat related and the cause of your cramps. Exercising never means overdoing it, it should be done depending on how much your body can make use of it. My advice would be to first consult your instructor at rec center and also the physician or doctors about this. If you are doing the walks/runs only for the sake of losing weight, I think you sould also consider some natural ways. Honey taken in warm water early morning maybe of some help. There are many others, which one would go with your health - for an answer to this, you could either search Internet or even a better start would be to consult a naturopath.

Stretching before and after helps as well as making sure you are getting the nutrients you need.

the idea there is to stretch first before and then walk before started running. at least two to three minutes then walk again, you can't force your feet

@Lolaze When a person started doing exercise , the pain starts . That is the nature .. Your lower legs cramp up , that is because you have to take bitter foods , like bitterguard , honey , dill like that ..
