Frustrating Medication Side Effect

I was recently put on a new medication for my Bipolar disorder, called Abilify. Its helping the things its meant to - my anxiety and rapid mood swings. The problem is it seems to be hurting my creativity. I struggle with finding things to write about, when I used to be able to write 10 things a day on that bubbly place. Its getting so frustrating. I guess its the price I pay for staying sane.

I've found that the mental effects of some of the medications I've been prescribed have been really annoying. When I first started the one I'm on, it made the left side of my brain feel completely bizarre. The sensation lessened after a few days, but it felt almost like that part had been disconnected if that makes any sense. What I've found is that the longer I take something, the less severe the effects tend to be. If you were just put on it recently, your body's probably still adjusting to the dosage. I was worried about creativity with the one I'm on, but once I adjusted to it things got a lot better. I've seen a lot of articles that say that creativity is all a matter of thinking about something in the right way, and that you can train yourself to be more creative. Maybe some of those exercises would help you train yourself to approach it a little differently than you're used to doing. I know it's not for everyone, but it might be worth a shot.

You have a good point, I've only been on the Abilify for less than a month...I just barely am past the bad physical side effects I had upon starting it.

@Lolaze I think the one that I'm on took about six weeks to hit the correct levels, and that's when the side effects got a lot better for me. It seems like 6-8 weeks is about typical, although I'm not 100% positive on that.

It's good that Abilify is helping with your anxiety and mood swings, but I'm sorry to hear about the side effects. I think Yuki gave some really good advice about giving yourself time to get used to the medicine, but if the problems persist it might be worth talking to your doctor about alternatives or dosages. Creativity is hard to turn on and off on demand, though, so maybe you're just experiencing some writer's block at the moment. I think that's something that happens to all of us from time to time...or almost all the time!

Maybe you should try to tell the doctor who prescribed it to you , the side effects on you which you seem don't like . Maybe he still have other medications for that .

There are always some undesirable side effects with meds I know myself. Like this one I take for IC, it makes me bloat out like mad. It is awful. At least you are making some discussions huh? Like this one

I am also Bipolar and I take 450mg of Trazadone at bedtime it definitely helps me to sleep but also helps the Bipolar and I also am on Zyprexa for psychotic episodes. I take Ativan for anxiety and I take Pristiq for depression. I tried Abilify and didn't care for the side effects. I will say a prayer for you. The Lord has led my Psyciatrist as far as the meds. God cares about everything and He understands what makes us tick. He even knows how many hairs are on your head WOW He is awesome, check Him out for sure.

Sorry to hear about the side effects of your medication. For the time being maybe you can look into writing prompts to help with the writer's block? It's a problem that I struggle myself too every now and then, and I found that writing prompts do help sometimes.

I don't know Abilifi, but I take antidepressants and I have experienced the same side effect. My medication also prevents me from being as creative as I used to be. I still try to write, but it is not easy. I have heard another people say the same thing, and I think that it is a pretty common side effect. I have been on antidepressants for several years, and I plan on quitting some of them in the future.
