Do you always stop at stop signs?

The other night, while I had been driving home with my youngest son, I was approaching a 4 way stop sign. As I was about to make my stop, a car that was coming from the right went right on through the intersection without stopping! They didn't even bother to slow down!
Although the speed limit is 55 mph, this driver seemed to be going a lot faster than that! But then again, cars on this road usually do...
All I can think of is what would have happened if I would have been turning left at that very moment that this driver raced through the intersection. Chances are, my youngest son and I would no longer be here.
Fortunately, I saw the idiot, so I was able to avoid such an accident!
At the same time, another thought crossed my mind. What if a pedestrian would have been crossing this street at that very moment? This particular road isn't lit up at night, so the driver surely wouldn't have seen them and would have hit that person!
Yes, I know that neither of these things happened, but as a driver why risk it?
For those of you that think "this will never happen to me" would you feel any differently if this driver would have killed your friend or family member? What if you were the driver and you happened to kill someone?
Just remember, driving is a privilege. It isn't a right. So don't drive recklessly! Doing so could very well end your life!
By the way, I don't mean to sound like a mother, but what do you expect? I've been one for the past 18 years.

You were sure lucky, I will say that. It could have gone badly, but your quick thinking avoided a catastrohpe. I always stop at a stop sign, and not just a rolling stop either, as I come to a complete stop, look both ways, and then proceed. Here in Oregon, if drivers don't come to a complete stop, then they get fined, as it is considered a rolling stop.

They get fined for it here in California as well.
Posted by Scott Desind , Feb 18, 2013 • Blog • No Comments One of the most common traffic tickets issued to the drivers in the state of California is for the rolling stop default. When drivers approach a stop sign, they are supposed to make a clear stop. H

@sacmom I stop at a stop sigh, even when there aren't any cars at the stop sign. I stop completely, look both ways, and then go on. My es husband lives in Washington State, and he got ticketed for doing a rolling stop, instead of a complete stop. It doesn't pay not to come to a complete stop, that is for sure.

Yes, I always stop when I'm supposed to! I don't get how people think they can bypass stopping at stop signs or red lights to make a right - stop means stop! I actually know a fellow mom who recently got a ticket for doing that - guess what - it was a 500 dollar ticket! I told her sorry, but yah, she needed to stop. Oh geez how many close calls I've been through myself like that! Thank goodness you guys were ok!! I tell my kids you can't assume other people are following rules - I mean that while driving too!

@much2say It's very frustrating, isn't it?
I was telling another member on here the other day, I wish that I could just teleport to my destination. That way I wouldn't have to worry about traffic. However, this can go for accidents as well!

I do slow down and stop at all stop signs. I was in an accident when I was younger. As my stepsister did not look at a stop sign and kept going. We were hit on the drivers side.

I always stop. I don't do those slow down and roll through bits. It is far too dangerous and I am always carrying precious cargo.

I stop at all stop signals and red lights.But I do meet many reckless drivers daily. Just as in your case,there are some who zoom past us who think they are smart,as we are waiting. When I was young I used to get angry and worked up,but after more than forty years of driving,I know there will be such people everywhere.

I'm disgusted with the number of drivers who happily ignore the stop sign at one particular intersection in our town. It's a two-way stop, and it seems like people constantly ignore the fact that they have to yield to traffic on the (major) cross-street. My current average is about one idiot trying to t-bone me per week. My husband, who drives a smaller car than I do, seems to have even more close calls there. It's ridiculous!
Oh, and there was one time last winter when he told me about a person who was driving down the road with her windshield completely iced over. She was speeding and went right through a four-way stop... my husband hesitated longer than he normally would have. If he hadn't, she would have hit the side of his car.

@sacmom No kidding!
A guy I used to work with would say that he needed a bumper sticker that said "Remove head from sphincter, then drive." The sad thing is it's so true...
It doesn't help that my state doesn't actually require you to do more than update your license photo every 8 years or so.

I always stop because it's places like that where cops like to hang out in hiding to catch people who don't stop at stop signs. I'd rather not waste my hard earned money on an avoidable ticket.

I always stopped when I drove. one of the reasons I quit driving is because I started having dizzy spells at odd times and was afraid it would happen while I was driving and I would kill someone

I'm glad you and your son are all right, and that nothing happened. It's always frightening when you have children with you, regardless their age. Or even when you have passengers. Unfortunately, there are idiots everywhere. Too many people had done the same to me, and I personally detest it when there's a child or passenger in my car. I think you have every right to be concerned about this. The reckless driver could have caused a horrible accident, and perhaps even a fatal one. I make it my point to always stop at stop signs or even traffic lights, you just never know when someone else will run their stop sign, or anything. Better safe than sorry.

There are always idiotic drivers and pedestrians on the road. So it is never safe even if the road is deserted and your car or you is the only one on the road. I have seen accidents which could have been avoided which got people killed. I hope we all can just be more careful when we are on the road.

i deal with stuff like this all day at work! (i work medical claims for an auto insurance company) people are reckless and thoughtless on the roads. its so stupid too because most of these accidents can be avoided.
