Do new members get ignored?

A discussion on another discussion site inspired me to write this. A man had been a member of that discussion site for several years and his wife just joined. The man wrote: ”When my wife shares an opinion on this site everyone ignores her. When I share exactly the same opinion I get lots of comments. That is so unfair”
It made me wonder if the same thing happens on myLot. I think that we are very good at welcoming and helping new members, and I hope that they don't feel that they get ignored in the beginning.
What do you think? New members of myLot: What is your experience?

I have seen some new members who didn't many responses in the beginning, and they felt a little disappointed, but the new members who have responded to this discussion have positive experiences, and I am happy to hear that.

I'm like you @sprinklesare4winners I've been here two days now and feel as if it has been much longer. I certainly haven't been ignored.

That is great to hear. Yes, there is a lot of interaction here compared to other sites, and that makes it a fun place to spend our time

If a new member joins, and starts a discussion, that user will not get ignored, as most of the time they want to know how mylot works, so the older users will help them in any way they can. Iknow that I always help the newbies, as I was a newbie once too, and had been helped, so I know how it is, not to know how things work especially when you aren't familiar with them.

I also remember what it was like in the beginning. I joined myLot 7 years ago, and at that time myLot used the old layout. I found it very confusing in the beginning, and I didn't know how to navigate around the site. I learned it after a while, but it takes a while to get used to a new website. It is nice that we can get help from old members in the beginning

@Porcospino Yes it certainly is, and I will help anyone that I can as long as I know the answer. They only way we all learn is to ask and help others who need it. i love helping others.

@Porcospino Same here, when I came back and found the new layout I needed time to adjust. I also found some interesting discussions about the new features and I started from there. Then with some more exploring, I found my way around the site.
@rosekiss The experience of old members should be transferred to the newbies.

I think in some cases people who have built up a reputation get more responses or more respect. It's human nature to center around people that are established.
Also some people chose to interact with people they know will interact back. I mean why should you interact with someone if they never interact back? I'm stating that in a theoretical tone, not literally. So someone who is popular and established may have a history of returning the favor while someone new doesn't have that history yet.

I think it is true that you get more responses when people know who you are.The thing about interaction is an important point. If people know that you usually interact back they more likely to respond to future discussions. Some of time ago I read a post from a new member. He or she mentioned a lack of responses, and someone pointed out that he or she didn't interact with the members who responded to the old discussions.

@cahaya1983 I receive suggestions from users who never respond to my discussions. They expect me to respond to their discussions, but I never see them in my discussions.

I agree. It's even more irritating when people suggest their own posts without showing any interest in participating in other people's discussions.

I felt quickly welcomed. Everyone has been very nice and positive. I have seen a few sites with a frosty elitist tone from senior members and moderator cronies towards newbies but certainly not the case here.

I have also seen other sites where newbies weren't treated very well. On some discussion sites the atmosphere isn't very friendly. I am happy that myLot isn't like that.

There is an element of truth in what you say. Veterans do get many responses as they have many connections. slowly with some interaction things should improve.

Yes, I think that things will improve when the new members interact and get to know more people. Older members have many friends and followers and they tend to get more attention.

I think it's not that new members get ignored. Old members may have more connection and they could seen more, so they get more attention. I don't think there's discrimination to comment on particular user

It is true that old members have more connections. That is one of the reasons why they get more responses than new members. The new members who have responded to this discussion all have positive experiences, and that is very nice to hear because on some sites newbies aren't treated very well.

@Porcospino By the time, if they are active and more active, they will be just like other old member who easily get responses on their discussion. Even if they show excitement, it could happen in very short time. So, new member should never give up

@Porcospino,I don't think newbies are ignored here. When I joined Mylot one month back,I was a newbie.Still my very first discussion was liked and commented on by veterans here.Instead,my experience is,it's a site where newbies are encouraged.I often come across discussions started by newbies and I never ignore them.I like them and comment on them.

That is great. I am very happy to read about so many positive experiences. On some sites the atmosphere is less friendly than here. I don't ignore discussions from newbies either. I respond if I can help or if I know something about the topic that they are writing about,

I agree with that. It is easier to get many responses when you have many friends. Some people don't realize that and they get disappointed when they don't get many responses in the beginning maybe because they compare themselves to older members.

I don't know about others but I don't feel ignored at all. I think when people see the effort we make to interact and participate, they will return the favor.

@cahaya1983 It is definately possible to earn money when we interact on other people's discussions.. Some days I don't start my own discussions, I just participate in other people's discussions.

@Porcospino That's true. I don't always get tons of responses either but I've noticed that so far most of my earnings come from my interaction on others' discussions so I tend to do that more.

It is also important how much you interact with the other members. I think that is the best way to find friends and followers.

@crazyhorseladycx Some people can't accept things that are a bit different, and it is good that you didn't change when you received those rude comments. I used to be an active Bubblews member, but I don't use the site anymore and I have deleted my articles. Yes, maybe that girl should just be herself and talk to other people. She might get more attention when she gets to know the other members.

@Porcospino yepperz, most fortunate to know some folks from the bubbs. 'twas mighty lonely there when i began! many folks didn't cater to my kinda writin' - e'en wondered why the heck i was allowed to dribble there. quite a few were a tad rude e'en, some downright nasty. 'few gave some 'tips' 'n the english language 'n told me how much better i'd be received if'n i straightened up 'n flew 'right'. i stuck with my true self 'n found others with 'n 'ppreciation 'f my quirkiness. perhaps this gal needs to do the same? jest be herself 'n others'll find her most appealin'.
yepperz, i'm kinda like that black eye that jest won't fade 'way,

From my point of view(Also as a new member), It's normal for old users get more attention(most because of followers I think) on sites with social interaction, it's something that happens mostly everywhere.
But as a new member, I didn't feel that new members get excluded or anything, the opposite, new members are treated very kindly.

I also think that the old members get more attention because they have many friends and followers. Some new members don't realize that and they get sad and disappointed when they don't get much attention. I remember a woman from another site. She was very hurt because she felt ignored, but I am happy that the new members of myLot don't feel that way.

Most of the new members from this discussion have positive experiences, and I hope myLot will become a positive experience for you as well Newbies get ignored on some sites, but I think that this site is different.
