for those of you who may not know, Uber is basically a taxi service that anyone can sign up to become a driver for, using their own car. from what i understand its much cheaper than a standard cab or limo and probably quicker as well.
i know it has its upsides but ive always been wary of it. im not one to get into cars with random strangers. id rather stay sober and drive myself. and being in the insurance business, i know if i was to get into an accident while in an Uber vehicle, my medical coverage may be denied (in NJ, anyway) since its technically a taxi and the person most likely would have a personal auto policy, instead of a commercial one as needed.
what do you think? has anyone ever tried this?

I didn't know about Uber so I looked it up. Seems like it's pretty controversial since the drivers don't have official license to drive cabs and some claim that's illegal and unsafe.

Uber has been banned in several Italian cities and it is illegal here in Switzerland. I would never use my car to transport strangers as my insurance would never pay in case of accidents. Put aside this problem, there are so many taxi drivers that are robbed and even killed by people who want to steal their money, why should I risk my life?!

Uber is a car service that started in the US; you register on-line with your payment details, and then when you want a car you can quickly do so on your smartphone. Shortly after, you get a message confirming the car and driver, the estimated price, and in how many minutes. No cash changes hands, all the driver’s photo and name is on your phone, everything is confirmed by text message and email, and you rate the driver at the end of the ride. It is more efficient than a taxi, the drivers are friendly and helpful, everything is clear from the outset (so no getting ripped off), and you don’t need need to fumble for euros or worry about tipping. My name is Santhosh I'm working in this website My opinion is Many of the drivers speak English, but even if they don’t it doesn’t matter.
When you order the car on your phone (in English) you set the pick up point and destination, you see the route and estimated arrival time, you know the approximate cost in advance, and the final cost is debited from your card automatically, so there is nothing to negotiate or discuss… a ‘bonjour‘ and a smile will suffice. Uber-Pop, which has been discontinued due to pressure from the taxi unions, was a bargain priced ride-sharing service by moonlighting non-professionals.
Uber-X is the most popular service (now that Uber-pop has been discontinued). It costs a 3rd to half as much as a taxi, and you are picked up by professionally licensed and insured drivers. The cars are clean and well-maintained, the drivers are friendly and professional, and they usually even offer you a bottle of water Uber Black Car is the more expensive service (but still less than a taxi) where you are picked up in a luxury sedan by a professional chauffeur wearing a suit.
