My harvest today - lady fingers and sweet potato leaves

I picked a few lady fingers from my garden again, after picking nine yesterday. I am so happy the lady finger plants grow so well, and we can see the flowers and baby lady fingers almost everyday. This is the first time I successfully plant the lady fingers. My children cut the sweet potato leaves as well, as they want them for lunch. I like sweet potato leaves, as they are really easy to plant, and nice to eat as well. So, these were our dishes for lunch. It's really nice to plant our own food. Do you pick any vegetables or fruits from your garden today? What do you have for your lunch?

I don't even know what a lady finger is. Here, a lady finger is a kind of creme-filled cookie - two spongy cakes with a filling. I wish I could grow those in my garden.

@LadyDuck I have heard of okra, probably they sell it in the produce department. But I have never looked at it or cooked with it.

@Rollo1 I use them to make seafood gumbo (when I can find them!). I tried to grow them but I was not at all successful. They have a strange texture, they become sticky when cooked. They are used in gumbo because they make the soup more dense.

I also thought to cookies when I saw the title. Those veggies are used in Louisiana to make gumbo, as a matter of fact they are called okras or... gumbo

When I have read lady fingers I thought to cookies, we call those veggies okras or gombos.

@jaboUK @LadyDuck I learned it's also called okra in mylot many years ago. We always call it lady fingers, and I thought it's a proper term. I just searched for fumbo, it looks nice!

@LadyDuck I'm glad you explained as I know what okras are, but hadn't heard them referred to as lady fingers.

I love sweet potato leaves as well, we call them camote tops here. But since I learned that it's not good for people who have high blood pressure, I stopped serving it to the family. My father has unstable blood pressure so I always make sure the food I prepare is safe for him. With okras though, we always eat them, we just have to buy them from the market. We still have sweet potato plant in our backyard. And we have lemon grass, horse radish or malunggay and sponge gourd as well which we harvest every now and then for our food. I hope the weather here will get better soon so I can start gardening again.

Ah so that's what sweet potato leaves are. I was wondering what it was. But then, does camote have sweet potatoes as roots? I thought that was a different plant. I thought kamote is like a vine and does not have roots that go deep. Oh wait I think that's kangkong (water spinach).

@owstalaga sweet potato and camote are the same thing... sweet potato should not be confused with THE potato though, I heard potato leaves are poisonous.

I didn't know it's called camote tops too. We always call them sweet potatoes here. It's a common dish when we fry sweet potato leaves. I didn't know it's not good for people who have high blood pressure. Thanks for telling me this, though my family members don't have that, but my father does. I wish I can plant the sweet potatoes, they are one of my favorite food. I only plant the leaves, but don't really get the sweet potatoes. Perhaps you can try to plant okra if you like to eat. It seems quite easy to grow. It's so nice to plant our own food. Hope your weather will be better very soon.

We usually just fry them as a dish to eat with rice. We usually put some garlic slices, then just fry the sweet potato leaves, and add some soy sauce as seasoning. It's really simple, that's why I like to cook them always. Sometimes I don't even put garlic slices.

@sofssu It's actually how I usually cook the vegetables, just fry with garlic, and add some soy sauce. My family like simple food, and I can only cook simple food. As for the sweet potato leaves, they are always cooked in this way even we eat out. I think it tastes good!

I didn't know lady finger is a name for sweet cakes or cookies, until I started this discussion and being told by the friends here. I think it's called okra in some countries, but we call it lady fingers.

Your ivy gourd look very good. My family don't always eat ivy gourd, so I didn't think of planting it. Perhaps I can check it out and see if I can plant some in my garden. Thanks!

Oh so okra is called lady fingers? I didn't know that! Too bad we don't have any plants around here to get fruits or leaves from... Now I'm hungry but I'm supposed to be sleeping hours ago and yet I am still awake from myLotting.

I think different countries really have different names for certain things. I learned it's also called okra in mylot, many years ago. It really takes times to plant our food, but it's joyful and fruitful as well. Enjoy your sleep!

These look like the potato leaves from Japanese/Vietnam red potato variety. I like sweet potato leaves too. Too bad I have no land for gardening, and my house does not have direct sunlight. Even then, the sweet potato plant manages to produce a few leaves a week! Not enough to cook instant noodle!

Nature will punish me for not making good use of the sweet potato leaves. There were no sweet potatoes and so I pulled out the creepers and just discarded them. I will remember to use them next time. Happy to see your vegetables. I have sown some and hope to see results soon.
