Low Carb

For as long as I can remember, I have had to watch my weight which means I have been on a lot of diets in my life. Some successful and some not. This time I am thinking of going on a low carb diet. I've been trying to read up on it and get all the information as well as finding some low carb recipes. Have any of you or someone you know ever gone on a low carb diet? If so, was it successful?

I have cut out on rice wheat based product and sugars. I have added more raw veggies and fruits to my diet to get the full feeling. I eat more lentils now to add to the protein.. I am not too much of a meat eater.

The only diet I used to follow is the "Scarsdale Diet", as a matter of fat it is a low carb-diet and it always worked for me. I used to diet every time I went back home from the United States, most of the time I had to shred a few pounds.

The US did not help your waist line is what I think you are saying. Was it good food or just you ate too much.

@Marcyaz The portions are too big, I usually do not eat too much. Every time I went back from the States I followed a diet for a couple of months, I did not like to put on pounds.

@TiarasOceanView Low carbs can be very restrictive and I do have concerns on whether I will be able to stay with it.

I heard it is successful, but like most diets, you don't get the nutrients you need. So if you did this, I wouldn't stay on it long and instead of watching what you eat, watch how many calories you consume. My daughter's sister in law lost a lot of weight this way and it was healthy because she got the nutrients she needed.

@Carmelanirel2 Yeah, I am worried about that as well. You can't have a lot of dairy besides cheese and a few others. That may bother me more than no potatoes. I am thinking more about following weight watchers and just watch my carb intake.

@gudheart I found a program online where I can enter the foods I eat and it will give me the amount of calories, carbs, fats and other nutrients. It will also recommend what the daily requirements should be.

It does take good monitoring to ensure still get enough carbs and nutrients to ensure good healthy balance. That can be hard to do though.

please use caution when startin' these fad diets. perhaps yer doc can hook ya up with a nutritionist? they could help ya come up with a plan to make healthy, lifelong changes - fer the weight 'n also fer the inflammation.

I don't plan on going no carbs or extremely low carbs. I will probably use weight watchers and just watch my carb intake, using healthy carbs versus potatoes, etc. I know people who have been successful on low carbs but I am worried that if I do that, my weight will come back.

@simone10 thank goodness, coz many 'f those diets can be so dangerous. i do think that if'n yer able to though, a visit with a nutritionist 'd prolly do ya some good. i had a great relationship with mine from scott & white in temple - she was extremely knowledgeable 'n got me set up on the correct path - takin' my health hiccups into consideration 'n doin' the 'ppropiate bloodwork 'n tests to see where to begin 'n followed up later so we could make changes. i'm purty confident i'd not made this much 'f a recovery without her. ya might also look at the glycemic index foods - where ya can jest switch out certain lower rated ones fer higher rated ones yer eatin'. its all purty fascinatin' schtuff.

I've tried so many diets but I now swear by Slimming World. I'd struggled for so long with my weight, nothing seemed to work. I joined Slimming World just over 2 years ago and I've lost 5 and a half stone, kept it off, and I'm healthy. Basically because SW is mostly common sense, balance, and not denying yourself anything. I wouldn't do a low carb diet (not least because I love my potatoes!) for all the reasons @RachelDSims24 said, although it can be used temporarily as a boost for a couple of days within a sensible eating plan. I eat pretty much everything, I just cook things differently and have made a few swaps like having skimmed milk instead of full fat.

Restricting any one food group will at first cause weight loss because some of the calories from that group are reduced, but to my understanding, this can lead to binging later on because you miss the foods so much. I did lose a lot of weight quickly on a diet that really limited my calories and took away all added salt, added sugar and I could only have two slices of bread a day. It all came back rapidly though when we had a major family stress happen.

I never encourage anyone to go on a diet unless certain foods do not agree with them. The key to losing weight is exercise.

@simone10 Unless the food goes against one's health such as diabetes eating less to lose weight I am not quite in favour of. You will lose weight all over even where you do not want to.

Hi there, Simone. I'm actually a personal trainer. I'm working on getting certified as a nutritionist, too. PLEASE do not go on a low carb diet. They're absolutely horrible for you. You're going to lose a lot of weight incredibly fast, then plateau and struggle losing anything else. You're going to look miserable, feel miserable, and BE miserable. Low-carb diets only starve your body of part of the three essential things we need: carbs, protein, and fats. I've had many friends go on low carb diets, like the Atkin's diet. My best friend Allie actually went on it last year. She starved herself of the necessary carbs her body needed, limiting them to a minuscule degree, and lost about 60 pounds in 2 months. She was so proud of herself. She decided to take a break from her low carb diet for about a week, and had already gained back 10 pounds. It's. So. Bad for you. Please don't do it, if you value your health at all. Instead, try starting small and getting into the genuine healthy lifestyle. It's guaranteed to make you feel better than you did before, and you're guaranteed to keep that weight you want gone OFF. Start off by doing simple things. Cutting out soda and drinking water, lemonade, and unsweet tea instead is a great place to start. You can also work on choosing alternatives at restaurants and fast-food restaurants. Look at the healthy choices, because you know you're on there, and try them out. You might find something you like at your favorite restaurant that's actually good for you, too. Instead of eating cookies or brownies to silence that sweet tooth, try fruit or honey and peanut butter. It will honestly staunch the craving, and you'll be eating healthy at the same time. Message me if you want more tips or are interested in transitioning into the healthy lifestyle, and if you listen to any of my advice at all, PLEASE don't do the low carb diet. Value your health above your appearance and try something that is better for you.

Thank you so much for your advice. After doing some research, I am thinking against doing this. Is there a specific amount of carbs a person should have either at every meal for the whole day? Should it just be about healthy choices and portion control? I have a lot of questions so I probably will be messaging you

@simone10 You can ask as many questions as you like! I would recommend that you start out on a protein-rich diet, and do light exercise a few times a week, even if it's just for five minutes. Go for a walk. Take a yoga class. Take your family to the park and play some games, or stroll through a museum. Just do things that get you out and get your blood pumping, and over time your body will start craving it. You'll want to do more and more. It is ALL about healthy choices and portion control. Just use moderation. Always go for the leanest meat, try to have some vegetable or fruit with every meal (even if it's in your drink), and just watch what you eat. Become conscious of exactly what you are putting in your mouth. Just keep in mind, it only takes 21 days to form a habit. Only three weeks of sacrifice and strong-willed, healthy choices before it becomes so easy, you won't even remember what it was like to be unhealthy. Doesn't that sound worth it to you?

I have been on a reduced carb diet for a while, and have had good results with it...., I read the labels on food products and make my decision based on the carb content... most people have a food item that is unique to them that could be the cause for the weight problem... for me it was potatoes and bread, when I cut them out I lost weight, but my friend eats bread nearly everyday but it does not cause her a problem... her problem is sweet things... I incorporate bread and potatoes into my diet, but to a lesser degree to what I was before... so i think if you try different food items to see which one may be causing the problem for you....

@simone10 it will be a bit more difficult for you then, I do not have a sweet tooth, but some of my favourite foods contained quite high levels of carbs... but with a few changes it still suited me....

In the past I have done the Atkins diet which is a low carb diet and it certainly worked for me. As a side effect of reducing my carb intake I found that I lost the pain I had in my knee joints and I had a lot more energy. I find eating too many carbs make me sluggish. Now I just count calories I would rather eat a little I love than a lot that I don't lol...
