California Dreaming

The shorter days are arriving now. It's been a gradual process, that you always try to deny, but when you wake up early, it seems one morning you have to acknowledge it's here and happening! I haven't even finished in the garden yet - surely this can't be the end of summer, here so abruptly? The days are still sunny, but already it's a sort of diluted sunshine. I go out into the garden feeling much more alert and able to do the necessary things, because I don't do well in those hot days of summer. It's not been an easy year. Wildfires, drought and despair with extreme watering restrictions - actually no watering allowed. Like many others, I had to watch plants die. But next year, like many others, I will be better prepared. At this time I'm planting for next year and harvesting my final squashes and eggplants from this year. The nights are much cooler. But today my thoughts are with the poor souls in California now struggling with drought and wildfires. They've lost so much. I feel great kinship with them.

yes ma'am, the days 're gettin' shorter 'n soon winter 'll arrive with bitter cold winds in these parts. hopefully we'll get some snow, wet schtuff that's so direly still needed here on the plains. i can understand yer kinship with those in california 'n all the other states that've been so devastated with fires 'n drought. seems to be spreadin', don't it?

@crazyhorseladycx Ah, yes, you get those terrible cold winds. I'm really hoping for rain here. We don't get snow as a rule, in this part of Canada.Actually we're not getting much rain now either, since that one and only rain a while ago.

I have read the news about the wildfires, this is tragic. The weather has cooled down and the days are short. It's almost time to remove the vegetable plants from the garden.

@LadyDuck Yes, it is time to start putting the garden to bed. It's been a very strange summer here. And now we're going into the short days and cold.

@VickiJW We also had a strange summer, it was almost cold in June, then we had two very hot weeks in July and another 10 days at mid August. Let's hope for a normal winter.

It won't be long until sunset comes at 4:30 and the days are only 9 hours long and we head into winter. But I won't miss the summer heat.

@Rollo1 I much prefer the cooler weather myself, but I don't enjoy the short days!

I would rather starve than starve my plants. I have no issues with water as we have our own well. Gardening is a passion with me and I see you too are a passionate gardener.

It feels like our summer ended in July, August was quite a cold month and September hasn't been much better so far, today it's cold and raining. I always think it's a shame we can't share weather as we all seem to get such extremes of it.
