Can we be good without God?

We often speak about the essence of morality in society and in light of this context, we don't fail to include God as the guiding force. I believe in God too though my conception of God is quite different from that of the majority. But I have a question. Can we still be good without God? By asking this question, I am not dismissing the fact that there is no God. I want to know your views about how can the world function still as it does, without God. Let us share and learn.

People today are trying to remove God from everything, They are trying to make God what they want him to be.....not what he is..... and all you have to do is take a good look at what this world has turned into ........ No body even knows what good morals is anymore.....no body knows what right and wrong is anymore.......

And what if I tell you that people have been fighting in the name of God? This is a truth we can't escape. Either God is in the picture or not, human has been moving and will move towards its own destruction. God changes nothing in this.

@dlr297 Thank you. So just like God gave us this liberty to choose, so we can choose to be good without God too.

@excellence7 Yes anyone can do good things....But without Gods guides as to what is good how are we to know the difference... Without God and his free Gift of salvation...All the Good things you do will not get you to heaven... So if you choose to be good, why would you not accept His free Gift by believing...

You can be good, but you can't be saved. I grew up Atheist. I was a good kid. But I wasn't saved. I didn't know the comfort, safety and security of knowing God.

This is very subjective. I disagree with this. Being saved is dependent on what you believe in and who are your God is. Humans need not be saved from anyone.

@PrarieStyle Thank you for your perception. I respect it but still I disagree with it.

Interesting again We should have been friends in real life In the simplest of words - Yes. God is nowhere responsible for our being good or bad. He is the creator and that is all there is to him. His role ends there. He has given us all that we need to differentiate between good and bad and take the right actions. Look at animals, birds and even fishes - they have not read the Religion and am sure they know nothing about the man made version of it. Still, they are souls who will love you unconditionally, who will come to you if you love them and even will not mind if you sulked on them. And they are all good in their community. It is only us, humans, who come with Greed, Selfishness and Hate. If you can get rid of these, I am sure, you would be good.

In total agreement. Thank you for sharing your views. I appreciate the contrast you made to the animal kingdom.

I think some people can, it just depends on the environment i guess. Everyone is born a blank slate and the things/people around a person can influence him/her when growing up. I know some people who do not believe in God who are good people

Thank you for your response. You are right. We don't really need a God to be good.

@1creekgirl yeah, even saints weren't 100% good before they found God. Sin is everywhere, and it helps when we do talk to God

There are a lot of "good" people but none of us is ever truly 100% good. That's because of sin in the world and we all need a Savior to help us be what God intended for all of us.

Without god there is nothing to say... Because of god's fear some people are fallowing morals. If it is declared that there is no god,...all the fellows definitely trespass the moral values and rules

Thank you for your response. I think morality is possible without God. What is the purpose of being driven by fear? Fear can lead people to comply and compliance is not always voluntary. I think we need to preserve morality irrespective of the existence of God. If we relate morality to God, we'll always be driven by a 'fear' and we'll never embrace morality as we should have.

@excellence7 I think you're right that a certain amount of morality can be possible without a belief in God. But the reason most Christians are Christians is because of love, not fear. Faith in God frees us from fear.

In all honesty, the concept of what is good and what is not good depends on our perspective of what we consider to "feel" right. At the same time, always following your heart doesn't always equate to a positive choice. For temporally felt emotions can cause us to make permanent decisions that cause us to be rooted to the past. Such as being mad that someone didn't fulfill your expectations and taking out tamper tantrums on others that weren't even the person who didn't fulfill your expectations. I believe God loves us enough to give us freedom of choice and that people, including myself, won't be anything without him. So while there will be consequences to all our actions God trusts us enough to make our own decision and whatever is our own decision will shape our reality of whether a life without him is good or not and whether what we consider right or wrong benefited our character growth.

Thank you for this nice response. But when I mentioned 'morality', I did not mean 'morality followed by heart'. I mean morality as defined in the norms and constitution of the society. It's a morality that has a structure mostly, though sometimes we'll need to listen to what the heart says too.

i believe that god sets the stage for things he needs us to do and if he wants us to do something he will show us what that is that he wants us to do then we can kinda set the stage to have him in our lifes and where we go with that hes there to back us up or steer us right so i think we can go about the things we need and go with him live how he would want us to.
