I Miss Growing Flowers

When we lived in Vegas, we had flowers covering our backyard. Unfortunately, the hot sun in Vegas would burn them all up by May/June but from February to May/June we had some really beautiful flowers.
The picture I've included is the very first tulips that I have ever had. I never tried to grow them before because I always thought they would be too hard. My brother came home one day with the tulips and they were small little sprouts. Within a few months, they had grown to the size in the picture and had bloomed. I was so proud of them. They were super easy to grow.
We live in an apartment now and don't have a patio so I can't have any flowers or plants to enjoy outside. I really loved nurturing my flowers each and every day. I miss having a house with a backyard. I miss growing flowers.

Over the last few years I have been lazy with my plants. I do love them though. I have quite a few houseplants. I loved how I could grow everything in San Diego, though.

@GardenGerty have you ever had trouble with annoying gnats from your inside plants? We had some several years ago and the gnats drove us crazy.

I live in the Greater Phoenix area for many years and it was difficult on flowers in the hot summer months. A very long time ago I tried planting some tulip bulbs but they never came up out of the ground and later I found out i had planted them the wrong way. Your talking about the tulips made me think of that again. At that period of time I lived in Ohio and it was in the fall of the year.

First of all the picture you have posted is awesome. I loved it .
I can understand your sadness that you are not able to grow plants because weather over there is harsh for flowers. You could try to grow those plant in pots (if feasible) which survive in hot weather. If you go to a nursery (where small plants are nurtured) you may get some plants of your choice.
Here in Delhi also we have 7-8 months of hot weather, so most of the flowers which grow do not survive here for long. During winters, we have variety of flowers and they do not die quickly. Roses come out in full bloom during winters here.

@dpk262006 I may try growing some flowers indoors and see how that works.

In that part of the country maybe cactus would be a good idea. They flower too and can be very lovely to behold. And, planters are a good idea for the type of flowers that would fry in the sun. That way you can take them out of the sun and protect when it is at its worst.

@simone10 Can you have any of them in the house perhaps? On a porch perhaps so it seems more outside.

@celticeagle We still tried for several years to grow flowers but in the end it was too frustrating and expensive. We did have a small cactus garden and even then, the sun would get too hot for them.

@celticeagle I think I'm going to try and grow some inside but we don't have a porch or a deck or patio. We live in an apartment.

@simone10 Actually most plants can be grown in water, although some are easier than others. In my photo above you will see lemon balm, a begonia, and Genovese basil cuttings that I have growing in my living room now. Most herbs can be rooted in water from cuttings in just a few days. After the cuttings develop healthy roots, then nutrients should be added to the water.

Those are quite spectacular!! Every leaf and bud seems perfect. The bulbs definitely like where they have been planted.

Those are really pretty flowers! Did you do anything special to help them grow?

@RachelDSims24 No, nothing special at all besides watering them everyday.

they're beautiful! a peach color? ya can grow those in pots indoors with a bit 'f light, hon. when they die back, jest pull the bulbs out 'n toss 'em in a bag 'n put 'em in the fridge fer a few months (fake 'em out thinkin' its winter) 'n then plant 'em 'gain. most all bulb plants can be done that way.

@crazyhorseladycx I think I am going to mention this to my brother. I would really like to have more than plants inside. I want flowers that have a lot of color.

The flower is really pretty. Hope you can find some idea to grow them again despite the limited space you have now.

There are some houseplants that have pretty flowers, like the spider plant. However, I know there is a difference between house plants and outside plants, but it's better than nothing.

@Carmelanirel2 I would love to have a spider plant. I had one many years ago when I was married the first time.

Lived in Maryland for several years. That's one thing I remember about spring time. The neighbors really liked their gardens. I loved the tulips.

@cmoneyspinner I would love to have a garden and be able to tend to it during the spring and summer.
