So, the topic for discussion on my mind today is, "Helping others is like helping yourself". How many of the myLot members agree with this quote..
As for me, I do, as by helping others, I am helping myself and at the same time learn new things too...

Yes, you are right that we are helping others, in a way we are helping ourselves. When we help others, we hope that they might return the favor, when we are in need, although it does not happen all the time. When we help others, we get to learn something, we get a kind of experience, we feel pride that we are in a position to help others, this gives us a kind of satisfaction which keeps us going.
Do you help others?

@ashuli - It is good to hear that you do not mind helping others, when they seek your assistance.
I fully agree with you that if you are helping one of your friends in setting up a blog, you could help up to an extent. You need to guide her till a certain level, after that she needs to attend rest of the job herself. Yes, spoon-feeding could spoil her and she may not make her own efforts to move ahead.
I understand that you have helping nature. Keep it up.

@dodoazo So have I as I have been blessed by helping others, and I never ever expected to get anything from them either. I have never gone into the idea of helping others and expecting something in return. I love helping people and I will continue to do so, and not ask for anything in return.

I do agree with your statement to a certain extent. I entered palliative care nursing to help others, not myself but, yes, it is good for the heart to know you are making peoples lives easier. It is probably good karma too. While we don't help for reward, it is nice to think that karma will smile on us and provide someone to help us if we need it.

@MoonHowler17 yes by helping others we do get some inner peace, In India too there are many people who do this and they do it just for their inner satisfaction

I agree, but I don't feel that anyone appreciates that about me ... I help people more than they're willing to wait & find out, but it takes me a little longer (because I'm a retarded-by-injury perfectionist).

@ashuli This quote is good, but as far as i know this won't be the same in every case. Helping is a good thing through which we may learn something new or a lesson for future. We shouldn't expect anything in return after helping.

Man is the highest temple of God, by serving man you are serving Him/Her. Try to remove selfishness and expectation from the gift of help you are providing the needy and you shall discover the joy of giving. The joy is in not knowing in what manner you touched the needy ( you may have been the only one to come along his way and help him in a long time! ), but at the same time knowing that the person in question is thankful to you for the same. That's how you help yourself! By serving God and serving yourself a reason to smile
