@Texan Tornado - Ganesha Chaturthi is a Hindu festival celebrated in honour of the god Ganesha, who has an elephant-head. The modern festival involves installing clay images of Ganesha in public pandals (temporary shrines), which are worshiped for ten days. These are immersed at the end of the festival in a body of water such as a lake, along with the idol.

@TexanTornado - It is assumed that we and God also are made of five elements that is - air, water, earth, fire and sky, therefore the idols are immersed in water which is one of the elements of our existence.
Also, the Lord Ganesha's idols are kept in temporary structures, therefore, Lord Ganesha is given a kind of send off so that he could be worshipped again next year during the auspicious period.

@dpk262006 Oh wow! Very nice. Thank you for sharing that. It seems quite interesting. What is the reason for immersing them into a body of water at the end, for them to travel on? Or is there a deeper significance to it?
