What are your favourite kitchen appliances or gadgets and why? Of small gadgets, my favourites are garlic crusher, just for the simplicity and lack of mess and metal tea bag so I can have a "proper" tasting cup of tea with loose leaf tea without straining leaves through my teeth The appliances I depend on the most are my sandwich press - wonderful for a quick, melty snack and pie maker. Us Australians love our pies. To me, everything tastes better when enclosed in pastry. I haven't had any food wastage since buying my pie maker. Any left overs make great pie filling. Left over spaghetti bolognese for example, equals tasty pies, sate chicken - pies, bacon, mushroom and tomato - you guessed it, pies. If you come to visit me, expect to be served pies

Oh, I have not even heard of a pie maker . Since I came here to the UK I do appreciate the kettle - as simple as it sounds - as it saves me a lot of time and it auto shuts down when it's done. Where abouts are you in Australia ? My wife actually has some relatives over there

Kettle was a good choice, @elitess Simple things are often the best. I am at the top of New South Wales, on the coast at Ballina. You may have heard of Byron Bay or the Gold Coast, which are both closeby. Where are your wife's relatives?

I had a sandwich maker for forty years and it broke last year. I loved it. I do need to get another one.

40 years! Electrical appliances aren't made to live that long anymore. You certainly got your moneys worth out of it. The newer item - a sandwich press - which is what I have, is awesome. They can be used open or closed to grill, toast or melt foods of varying thicknesses. Very versatile.
