Do You Have a Long Drive to Visit Family?

United States

Three hours! That's how long we have to drive when we visit my parents. We only do that drive once a month but we stay all day and have a real good time. When you visit family is it a long trip? Do you drive? Fly? Take a bus or train? How do you travel to visit family members who don't live nearby? I'd go by broomstick but last time I lost my pointy hat. (But don't worry, I found a new one:

One hour and a half by car. I live in Switzerland, my Mom and the rest of my family in Italy, but it's not too long to go there.

That's really nice that your drive isn't too long. Do you have to wait a long time while crossing the boarder though?

@LadyDuck Oh wow. Knowing my luck I'd get the timing all wrong and be sitting there at the border for 2 hours.

@Novelangel It depends which day of the week and which time. We get up early in the morning when I decide to go visit my Mom, so there is not a long waiting time at the border, at most 10 minutes, but during the busy hours you can wait up to 2 hours.

I have two kids. My dauighter lives in Fenton, MO, and my son lives here in Oregon. It only takes 30 minutes to get to my son's, and I wiould have to fly to get to my daughter's. I haven't seem my daughter in several years, but I do talk to her everyday. It seems like she is right next door, that way. It is hard being away from her for the holidays, but I spend my holidays with my son, which I do enjoy, as I wouldn't want to spend them alone.

@Novelangel It is very hard to not see her and my grandsons, but I am able to talk to her everyday on the cell, so we are keeping in touch. We also text each other to see how things are going as well. I am glad that I have that option, as I would feel bad if I couldn't talk to her in any form.

@rosekiss I try to call my parents every day during the week while my hubby is at work. On the weekends I usually call them at least once. I agree that it's great to have the option of talking when you can't be there in person.

It's tough when a family member lives in another state, too far away to see them regularly. My brother used to live in Florida for about 20 years, but now he lives in Michigan with the rest of us. :)

As we get older, some family gets further away. But I have a brother and two sisters very close, two in town, one in the next town over. Another brother is in a neighboring state. Rarely see uncles and aunts. Actually think I have just one aunt left. Cousins, never see. Don't know who they are, lol.

That sounds a lot like me. I have such a large extended family that I'll never meet all of them and most of them live in the same state as me too. Most of my family members are at least three hours away though.

It is only about an hour and a half drive to see my kids and grandkids which isn't too bad at all.

I agree, that's not too bad a drive at all. That's about how far we live from my hubby's family.

That IS fortunate that your momma lives in town. It would be nice if someday I could move a little closer to my family. Perhaps one day. I recently heard about some website where you can arrange long bus trips for only a dollar...the catch? You don't get to pick the travel day or hour.

My sister and my nephews lived two hours away from us. Occasionally we drive to her place to play with the kids. Usually, its a nice drive because she lived just outside the freeway which gives a fairly nice ride.
