Self Driving Cars - What Does The Future Hold?

I'm sure everyone has read something, somewhere about the myriad of testing going on in regards to self driving cars.
With more and more sophisticated self driving aids being integrated into production cars at the consumer level, it seems that some sort of automatic driving is coming sooner rather than later. What do you all think the future may hold for us? What would be your ideal situation?
For myself I love driving, but it's also the bane of my existence. Odd juxtaposition that, I drive the most boring 100 mile round trip daily commute. I would love nothing more than to push a button and let the AI take over for me, at least once and a while.
However, on the weekend - dropping the top and hitting the backroads is something that nothing else in my life can compare to, so I'd never want to give it up. Will that experience survive the transition to automotive AI? Will it end up like riding horses, only done on ranges by those with means?
What do you think?

I remember reading somewhere there were issues with these, with more crashes, but not because of the self driven car, but because of the other drivers!

I remember seeing that as well - the AI cars had issues with what came down to bad human drivers in other cars. Which brings up another ethical point, what if you are in the car and you can either hit a schoolbus filled with kids or hit a guardrail and you'll die? What choice does the computer make or does it scram - hand you back the wheel and say "ain't my problem!".

@bubasu760t wow, good point. what would that car do. And maybe the best option is a city with all smart cars, you hit a button and one comes and picks you up, no real drivers.
