Would you choose to be immortal?

If you had the choice of either remaining mortal or being immortal, what would you choose?
I would personally choose to remain mortal because the quality of my life is much more significant than the quantity of my life. Living a quality life driven by purpose is much more meaningful. If death presents itself to me now, I will smile and embrace it because I have seen so much already at this young age. I have no big enthusiasm or dream to live forever. Living forever would mean living with a purpose that will need to be renewed again and again. And much more.

Our soul/spirit is immortal. I personally don't care to drag this body around forever.. I would be happy to go when my marching orders come. I guess I have enjoyed every bit of my life and I would not hold back when the time comes. I look forward to the life after.

Do you really wish for an after-life? Any reason for this?

@excellence7 Yes.. I believe that our spirits go to hell or heaven depending on our choices on the Earth.. I want to be in heaven.. or with my maker.. don't you?

@sofssu Thank you for your views. I respect them. I don't believe in heaven and hell though.

I sure wouldn't want to live forever on this earth. But I believe that every soul will continue to live past this life, either in heaven or hell. You know, just because we choose not to believe in something doesn't make it less real. I could refuse to believe the road signs that say "Bridge washed out ahead." but that wouldn't keep me from plunging into the river!

Thank you. Just like people refuse to believe in EVOLUTION doesn't make it less real either.

The lord almighty is sure to come in his own good time, for every one of us. Not much point in bothering the grey matter of what may not take place. We all surely aren't immortal, and we know that. The hypothetical question is neither here, nor there.

Thank you for your response though we don't share the same view on the last line you wrote, "neither here, nor there". I believe we are mortal in the "here" and immortal in the "there".

@gregario888 And as we don't have that someone around, we push ourselves into various presumptions. So what can right for someone can be wrong for someone else and vice-versa. At the end, truth sustains itself. We just have our own version of it.

@excellence7 Thanks for the discussion, Kevin. The matter is that since, immortality just isn't there-the "there", may be nothing more than a null or void. it would be better if we had some one around. who had lived all the days and nights, ever since this oblate spheroid of ours came into being.

I have very mixed feelings about this. I don't feel like I've achieved what I was put here for and I'd like to make my life more meaningful, no matter how long that takes. I also want to believe that my soul will live on in some form with better things in front of me.

Do you really want to live in other form after this lifetime? Any reason for this?
I would not wish too. I want to just end after this lifetime. No more drama. No more complications.

@sofssu Life itself is a bundle of choices we make all the way through. It isn't something that exists in itself. It is something that exists from us. We are 'LIFE' too. But this should not be a reason for us to be immortal or to await for a promised land after this life. Well, that's my views.

@excellence7 The drama and complications come from our choices.. life doesn't roll them out to us.

There is a natural order to things. Although, Lobsters have never been noticed to die of aging ( they are somewhat presumed to be immortal ). Yet they hardly are a crucial factor when it comes to shaping the planet's future. Humans however, are critical to that fact! Since our existence, the planet has witnessed complete peace for less than a hundred years! That's not to say that we are a doomed species and that we should die just to save us from ourselves, am sure it would be amazing to have Einstein, Newton, Tesla remaining immortal and contributing even more to our knowledge pool; but remember it is the fact that our lives are limited that provides us with motivation to get up and do something while we can. It may very well be the only thing! That's something we'll lose to immortality- a cause, a motivation.

If I can choose to be immortal together with my wife, then we would be immortal. If we can live forever, it means we can love each other forever. The only thing is that we should not have children. It would be unbearable to see your own children to die of old age while you are still alive.

This is a good response but it shows that immortality is being conditioned here, that is, you can afford to never die ONLY IF your wife also exists forever. Now try to answer this question:
What if you could live forever alone, without your wife and children? Would you accept such immortality?

@excellence7 If I have to be honest, I am not sure at all, but I do not care, the idea of an afterlife is scary.

I don't want to be in immortal flesh because lessons of deprivation wouldn't be able to teach me how to be more thankful for what I do. Being immortal would mean I have it all and that's rather dull. Also, if I was immortal wouldn't that mean I'd keep growing while people around me passed away? Not being able to join them would just make it harder on immortal flesh. Though I don't believe in immortal flesh, I do believe in immortal soul and the after life. I think what I'm trying to say is I wouldn't wanna be immortal on earth but I don't mind the immortal after life because I feel as though the after life has more understanding to God compared to immortal existence on earth surrounded some material possessions that don't honor God.

For me I choose to be a mortal because God gave us a chance to live that's why we should cherish every moment that we live in this world. We should make sure that we do all the things we wanted to do before we come back to our one and only creator which is God.

The idea of existing for ever is one that can only horrify. The further idea that one might do this in some disembodied state as a "soul" is even more horrific, which is why I profoundly hope that the Christians and other religionists are wrong - which they almost certainly are!

Not totally in agreement. I think the reality of 'soul' is a truth; well for me it is. I wish they religious people are wrong when it comes to believing in A GOD instead of believing in THE GOD - the supreme cosmic energy. I also hope they are wrong when it comes to traditions and religious principles.

If you were fit and had your marbles then that would be ok but as we age and become less independent and rely too much on others then it is time to say goodbye world!

Hi Kevin,
Being immortal while everybody around you is dying is like a punishment. With my answer I can say that I am already thankful with the life God has given me. If this life will be short or long, I do not know. But one thing is for sure, I treasure each day and live the best I can for each day because I do not know how long I can be on this earth. I am still single and many people push me to get married soon. I do not know what are their descriptions of happiness. It seems like being single at my age is a no no in this society. Anyway, its my life and as long as I am happy, I do not have to go with what is the norms of the society.
