The pain of discipline

My father was diagnosed with Diabetes when he was quite young. He was in his late twenties, and was married only for a short time. My mother then took it upon herself to control the disease. She gave him cooked broken wheat instead of rice, which was our staple food, and they went for long walks everyday. This was their routine from my earliest memories. As a child I used to resent how my mother enforced this regime so strictly, and I did not understand why my father put up with it, although he so obviously disliked it. Today, at 91, my father can read the newspaper without glasses, and can take care of himself. His blood sugar is under control, and he was put on half tablet of metformin only a couple of years ago, more for the satisfaction of the physician than his actual need. I cant say the same of myself or my brother. We are both on high doses of medication, and still struggling to keep sugar levels under check. I now admire my mother's strict discipline, and wish I could be more like her

Your mother too must have disliked eating the same thing over and over, implementing such strictness over herself and everyone around her but when you care for someone. The pain of having to do so disappears because you know the pleasure of having your beloved with you far outweighs the ache of having to sacrifice such small things. Yes that was her smartness but it was most important;y her love, that paid off in the end :)

Your mother sounds like she is a very smart lady and your father at 91 sounds like he's got a good life thanks to your mother's discipline

Yes. She must be smart to do what she did so many years ago, when there was not much awareness of the disease.

I am sure your mother did not like doing that but had to so your father could be healthy and your mother was just making sure of that. So many just do not think anything will happen to them but I know a fellow who was diagnosed when he was young but had never taken care of himself. He is paying for not taking his meds when he should and eating junk food, he has had to have his foot removed and is now in rehab. learning how to walk with his one foot, very sad.

@Shyamalaa It is definitely his own fault for not taking care of himself but you know some people just won't listen.

It is so sad, particularly because it could have been prevented with a little care.

my mum has diabetes and copes with it very well. I am clear as I have been tested for it.

That is great! A good example set by you father. It is not easy to control sugar, once its level shoots up. One has to be a stickler for discipline, in such matters. I'd say, your mother surely measured up to that task.

Sugar control can go way out of whack if you do not take care of what you eat and taking your shots or pills when you should.
