Youth and cigarettes. There is a little problem with cigarette companies. A lot of people quit smoking every year either willingly or by dying. Now, dead people can’t smoke, so how to get the smokers? Obviously, they target youth. Young people are their only option of replacement as they are more likely to take risk of ignoring the consequences. “Younger adults are the only sources of replacement smokers” - RJ Reynolds, 1984. And they have succeeded in their mission already. According to a survey conducted by GATS, 83% of the people started smoking when they were in the age of 15-25 in India. Why cigarettes? Nicotine is the addictive chemical in cigarettes. But that’s not the only thing that attracts youth. A survey conducted, revealed that the designing of the cigarette packs have a huge impact on teens. VULNERABLE POPULATIONS ARE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE AND HIGHLY RECEPTIVE TO MARKETING. The other reasons for youth to start smoking include looking cool, mature or sociable. Few even believe that use of tobacco helps them reduce stress and weight control. What logic? Wake up......... Still a large population is unaware of the ill effect of smoking. Awareness is something, on which government needs to pay great attention, and the advertising of tobacco should be stopped. But above all this, every individual who indulges in smoking should realise that it comes with a cost. Your health is much more important than smoking a cylindrical blend of tobacco, cotton and paper. Find alternate solutions to stress and weight control, and there are many other ways to be sociable. You don’t need to kill yourself for that. Take care!
