i was walking downtown today , when i noticed a very old lady , hardly walking , and trying to cross the street,
i approached her and asked if she may need any help crossing the street
she said oh yeas , i gave her my hand , she leaned on my and we crossed the street . she said to day its the first time she is out without her equipment . i said then thats a good progress,
then i asked her if she need any more help going to any place , she said just let me here beside the wall and i don't need any help ,,,
i was sure she needed help to go on shopping , but i couldn't do any thing else since she said NO i don't need any more help
why do you think she said that ?
why as many times i try to help one he refuse while they really obvious that they need help
will we refuse help to when we grow up ?

People want to be independent and not show weakness...even us old folks!

Everyone who has commented has had a good answer and they may have all played a part in this particular scene. I believe the biggest problem though is indeed, fear. Today people have no natural affection even within the family. There is no love from child to parents and sometimes not the other way either. People who you think are your friend won't lift a hand to help you unless they are getting something in return. The whole world is angry and doesn't know what to do.

Because elders don't want to feel that they cannot do certain activities without the help of young people.

Getting old or older does not mean total incapacitation . Older people still need to feel they are in control and independent. At least they want to try and there is nothing wrong with that.

Obviously there's lack of trust.....very few people usually help the elderly, and half the time is when those helpers have a hidden intention. So this lady for instance was surprised to see you help so much maybe, so she didn't let you help. She thought you would go away after helping her cross the road. Unfortunate really.

You are kind to offer help. Sadly sometimes it takes pride before a fall! There are also so many people ready to scam people so there is also an element of distrust of strangers even though you may have had good intentions!
