How to prevent cough and cold?

The weather here is changing. And humidity is high. If we aren't careful enough, we tend to catch common cold. How to remedy it? Or better yet, prevent it? I just got better after 3 days of headache and sore throat. What should we do so that it doesn't happen again. For example, I don't drink soft drinks or eat ice-cream in this weather, it's a dead gateway to catching cold. Any other ideas?

I think you better take more precautions to avoid cough and cold. Now a days morning and nights are getting cooler so we should dress up accordingly. Days are still hotter so we could use AC during day time but using it during night could cause problems. Take lukewarm water instead of cold water. If unfortunately cold and cough have caught you up, you could try gargles with warm water with some salt mixed in it or if possible Bitadine gargle liquid. If you have blocked nose nothing could beat steaming at least twice in a day (before sleeping and early in the morning). Now a days hand held streamers are available, you could use that. If everything fails better go to a Doctor and take antibiotics and/or anti allergic as prescribed by him. Don't worry you will be alright soon.

@ria1606roy It's good to hear that you acted on all the tips I have mentioned and now you are back to normal. Yes you are right that we should wash our hands at regular intervals.

@dpk262006 yeah. I've been going on and off the disease chart and it kind of feels sick! I'll be drinking the lemon-honey juice first thing in the morning! Thanks.

Yeah thanks @dpk262006 ! No I recovered in three days from the cold, and did everything you just said. Bathing and drinking warm water, gargling in saline water really helped me a lot. The gargle especially, one day I did it twice and the next day I felt so much better and clear. And the main thing they are printing in the news to prevent cough and cold is maintaining hand hygiene. That is important too.

Those pests are hard to avoid. Some you get off touching or in food but so many are air borne I think so hard to avoid. I think the best protection is our immune system which is complicated and goes along with our overall health. If we choose to live in a plastic bag won't build our resistance up to the little germs.

@ria1606roy Well I should do more and do it better. The basics never change do they? Sleep, eating habits, exercise and emotional stress factors. We are often abusing ourselves or can't help depleting those areas, so I try to keep them up but it is always a challenge. Even enough basic clean water intake is not looked after properly. You named some good food groups. The other thing of course is allowing our self to be introduced to bacteria which will always be part of our life cycle, so we can exercise that immune system.

@Bluedoll bacteria is always present in our body otherwise we wouldn't be able to perform half of our body functions. Hence sometimes probiotics is a good choice of medicine for stepping up immunity when it is down for a while. And vitamins are important too, so exposure to minimum amount of sunlight, eating vegetables and citrus fruits are essential. And yes, as you rightly mention, the basic practices of life. Adequate sleep and intake of fresh drinking water is very important.

Rightly said @Bluedoll a weak immune system cannot stand up to anything. We have to try and eat all kinds of food and veges, and get out from the house to keep up our health. Thanks. What do you do to keep your immune system strong? I mean to say, any particular thing you eat or drink or do?

I see @writerjo I am bathing daily in hot water now. And have stopped sleeping in the AC room. I drink warm milk almost everyday. Should I try lemon juice in the morning?

We drink soft drinks or eat ice cream no matter what the weather is like. Most of the colds and sore throats we catch are from either other people or germs that are in the air. I'm not really sure how to avoid it besides washing your hands often.

yes what you said about catching the germs from others is true, but to have the virus act within you is mostly when there is a mismatch between temperature of inside and outside your body. That's why if we suddenly cool ourselves on a really hot day by getting into AC or drinking cold drinks, we make ourselves vulnerable to common cold. It's maddening hot out here during summer. Although people mainly catch fever when there is change of weather going on.

@ria1606roy I've never had any problems with going from hot to cold. Maybe I've just been lucky.

I never take water immediately after returning home. I also advise my daughter not to drink cold water immediately after returning from school or after playing games. This is an age-old technique passed from generation to generation for avoiding cough and cold.

so true @SHARINGPARTHA It is not at all advisable to drink cold water on entering home. The body needs to be cooled first. The change in temperature just creates ground for pathogens to thrive,

There many ways in which you can prevent yourself. First of all have self control.Don't drink ice cold water or cold drinks when very thirsty. This is the main cause of sudden soar throat. Avoid taking bath during nights. And you can always ask you family elders for home remedies.??

yes bathing at night should always be avoided if possible, especially during change of weather. And cold drinks are already a no-no for me :) Thanks for your input.
