The Tiny House Movement

Tiny homes are for people who don't want to work their lives away!

I know a lot of people out there are interested in "The Tiny House" movement. I have recently done some research and have to say these "tiny houses" are smart, simple, and beautiful. There are many videos out there that show the different models on You-tube. People that don't want to work their lives away have decided to go for this low cost way of owning a home. I think the Mcmansion is the thing of the past and that smaller and more simple homes are the thing of the future. Does anybody out there have any thoughts on this topic?

I watch all the tiny house shows on TV - no way. We had a 1500 sq. foot home several years ago and it felt like 500 sq. ft. I need space..then we went to 3,000 sq. foot which was too big, now we're at 2300 and that's just perfect.

I have to have my desk top and lap top and my TV and there is not that much room or the electrical power for that many items.

@jstory07 My knees just can't handle ladders and tiny steps. No way could I handle getting up into a loft. Not once let alone each and every time I needed to sleep.

I saw a television programme about these houses, and the ones featured looked lovely. If I was on my own they would be great, but I'm not sure if there are two of you.

Plenty. Smaller home means a) Savings on floorand toilet cleaning liquids, deodorants, room fresheners, etc. b) Savings on repairs; c) Savings on periodic renovations to keep things up to date for latest additions and include latest interiors; d) Savings on unwanted guests who choose to stay over longer than they are welcome simply because there is an extra bedroom there; e) Reduction in friends who are with you because they can see your wealth, and would leave you when it is gone; f) Lower taxes and clutter that you accumulate over a period simply because there is additional space; g) Less power and water consumption; h) Less need to compete for earning for all the above and more time to enjoy Vivaldi's Four Seasons, and look after children; i) Less people who are envious of us Simply too good to be true. Problem is when family members do not understand logically stated stuff. Out here they compete for larger and larger homes. No not larger grounds, but larger constructions. What it does is a) prevents rain water seeping into the soil, and therefore creates water problem since rain water drains away; b) Creates false demand for homes that will not be used optimally and consequently causes pollution due to manufacturing of cement, paints, bricks, etc. I could go on.

I wrote a discussion about this earlier ( ), in which I said my primary concern is that this is a fad that is going to die down (like the "earth houses" did [not that those houses ever really caught on]). I think the other problem is that, because of the popularity, "tiny houses" are now starting to cost more than a "traditional house" with four times the floor space. I have a "small" house that's less than 900 square feet, and the cost when I bought it was $37,000. Even today it's appraised for about $50,000; and the good news is that in 5-10 years it'll still be a viable house instead of a white elephant.
I'm watching Tiny House Hunting on the FYI channel. Apparently, 'tiny houses' (under 500 square feet) are quite the rage right now. I'm laughing at...
