When you picket out your bridal bouquet, it was probably make of sweetly scented flowers, but that wasn't always the case. If you can believe it, in medieval times, a young woman would carry bouquets of garlic, chives or any other herbs that had a strong fragrance to protect themselves and their new union from all things evil.
I found the church where my great, great, grandmother was married. I would have to look up the date, to be sure, but I wonder what bouquets women in the 18th century carried? Sadly I haven't been able to get back any further than that to date.

A lot of cultures have lot of superstition to this date!! Some still consider that if the last name of the bride and groom are starting from same alphabet then it is bad luck...
Some places it is considered a bad omen to get married in the month of may!!! So, I wont b surprised if the above said tradition is still running somewhere in the world!!

It would be interesting if you dug further and found out what brides in those days believed in. We had our own beliefs which are still doing the rounds.

That could be where the tradition of having flowers as bouqets came from. Today, no bride uses garlic or other herbs anymore. It will seem eccentric to use those nowadays.
