I Stopped by my Parents' House

I stopped by the house today to drop off trash (it's because I produce so little that I just put mine out with theirs) and recyclables, and ended up chatting with my mother. She's been writing grants lately to try to get funding for an ambitious glass park she's been working on for over a year. There is a lot to that project and it keeps us busy. I went past the television and there was a sticky note on it, that read "Tech guy coming on Friday to look at cable box." I asked if they were having problems with the TV and was told that it hasn't been working for the last few days. So I said I would fix it. I took all the wires out of the box and detached the connections from it to the TV. I noted that the cable cord was a little loose, but didn't think that was the only problem. I even got out the compressed air and blew the dust out of the box. Then I hooked everything back together and turned it on. After it booted up again, nothing happened. I would not be defeated, so I played with the settings and found the channels were off normal settings, but it was still static. Then I went into its input settings and change things back to the usual settings. The TV was fixed. Now everything works again. So my mother called the cable company and told them that no one needed to come after all. Everyone was happy. I guess it's a good thing that it was trash day!

So now you can expect that "Morgan, it's trash day!" phone call when anything else breaks down at your parents'.

Well they tell me other things as well. Right now I have to figure out the best electric generation supplier to switch everything over to.

Oh yes, we really miss having our son nearby for having such matters attended to. No doubt you keep their computer operating as well!

Yes, I'm usually cleaning it out and removing all sorts of viruses and malware. They had a really nasty one in the summer that jammed up the works and it took half a day to get rid of.

@valmnz They've been much happier since I came back to the area, but I've had less time to my own life these days!

The kind of thing that our parents had children for. There's a certain generational technology gap.

Yes, I'm always fixing their computers, programming GPS systems, programming universal remotes, fixing the TV, and lots of other things I would consider low level difficulties.

Handyman is what I would call you. We need such people in this world when those techies take time or mess things up making them worse than before.

I'm not even that skilled. My brother is really great at that kind of stuff. Probably why he's a senior analyst at Twitter. Thank you for the acknowledgment though! It makes me happy to be helpful. :D

I'm an engineer too, so I can read technical schematics and such to help with mechanical problems.

There's something very satisfying about managing to fix these things yourself

Yes, especially when you decide you will fix it and you do, rather than saying you'll 'try to fix it' and are unable.
