2nd October is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi who is also known as "Father of our Nation-India" or simply "Bapu" The day is declared as a national holiday and all schools and offices are shut on this day.Gandhi gave our nation and the world the principles of truth, non-violence and honesty which are still remembered and widely used till today. Gandhi has a huge contribution towards India's independence. He became a keen political leader and fought for the nation. He even founded the philosophy of non-violence (ahimsa) and truth (Satyagraha). He had been imprisoned on several accounts during the freedom struggle. His high thinking, simple living and strong willpower made him a revered leader of India. There is a lot to learn from his life history. For all Indian he is still a true inspiration of sacrifice, honesty and dedication,

I agree Gandhi is the father of the nation and there is a lot to learn through his life and times...However, today is also the birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri who made immense contribution to the nation , was a simple , committed leader who is all but forgotten by the party that he represented ...sad but true !

@kiran8 I agree! He was the most down to earth Prime Minister India ever had. I came across a photo of Shashtri ji which shows his true dedication towards his work even when he is traveling.

@kiran8 Completely agree! I think Gandhi family has ruled the nation more than anyone else, still they couldn't do any good for the country. We are still behind some nations.

We all should feel proud that we have taken birth where the great Saint Mahatma Ghandhi was born. His teachings are still important and he is not only followed in India but across the Globe. He was a real icon whose contribution to India's Independence was invaluable. He always wanted India to move ahead but sadly he was killed few months after Independence.

Gandhi certainly deserves a public holiday in his honour. He was a great man and lived by his principles no matter how difficult people or life became.

True thoughts and facts! Mahatma Gandhi gave everything to free this nation and work towards a more co-operated non-violent future of India. And let's not forget his tiresome contribution towards South Africa against Apartheid. He was the true incarnation of humanity.

Various action of Gandhi-ji, particularly during the last part of his life, have become controversial. Nevertheless, he would be known as apostle of peace, non-violence and truth.
