Man lynched for ''allegedly'' keeping beef at home.

50 yr old Mohammed Iqlakh was lynched by a mob of apparently 6 men after an announcement in the local temple was made alleging that he had beef stored in his home refrigerator, in Dadri village near New Delhi. So apparently all it takes is a group of misinformed youth and a touch of vigilantism to result in an innocent's death? People being killed over storing food products? Is that the nation we have been dreaming of? Have we been really so desensitized?

I believe that there is a law in Uttar Pradesh which forbids the slaughter of cows. It is a law made for Hindus, of course, since Muslims are allowed to eat beef. It seems that, although this man was a Muslim, the allegations were untrue and that he only had goat meat in his freezer. It rather looks as if the whole incident was an example of anti-Muslim feeling which may or may not have been instigated by the BJP. It is very sad that people of any religion can be so easily whipped into such a frenzy, on such small pretext, that they will attack and kill an innocent person merely because he belongs to another religion.

@owlwings, I doubt if BJP has anything to do with it because the normal practice is to blame BJP for all such tensions , and later it comes to light that they were not involved at all...There are many other extremist groups among Hindus who are behind such acts..

@kiran8 The article I read mentioned BJP but made it clear that BJP denied any involvement (which is why I said "may or may not have been instigated by the BJP").

The law of the land is one of the best in the world. What it lacks is its execution. The law-executing agencies are slow or incompetent to nab the culprits. Moreover, the personnel are overburdened with cases and political pressures. However, all is not lost. Considering the population of the country and abysmally low level of poverty, the crime rate in India is low. We must hope for the best.

Instead of stigmatizing the country over one or two isolated unfortunate incidents, we must talk the about the positive developments in every aspect of life which remain unreported or under-reported. We should not be cynics, instead we must be optimistic in our attitude.

@SHARINGPARTHA That is true and the exact reason why these events get the publicity that they do because in a developing nation boasting the highest GDP and aiming or the rank of a super power, we still have majority of population that is drunk on communal violence and complete disregard for the law. Muzaffarpur and now this. For a country making its footprints on the global platform, such incidents should be a thing of the past! Sadly, they aren't

Agreed! Implementation is what we lack. U.P. has the lowest policeman to per thousand civilians ratio. Plus one must understand that a police man is also a part of a society in which he lives and therefore not insulated to the thoughts and mentality of the community he lives in. His emotions are bound to get involved in tackling such an issue.

It is such a barbaric act and that too done without any proof, I sincerely hope that the fellows responsible for this are caught and severely punished so that others are warned.India is becoming a very intolerant society because of the wrong acts committed by the previous governments ...

@Kchitij2007 Of course we cannot have ban on food items in a secular state where people have the freedom to eat what they want ! The only issue is butchering cows without legal papers , that one can understand !

@kiran8 that is true but one must understand that cows aren't butchered, since they produce milk and are more valuable that way, buffaloes are butchered! Also, beef is a Rs. 3 bn industry and a source of jobs for thousands! India is also the leader in beef exports, all this would be lost if people muddle up the basic concept of beef as meat and as an employment opportunity.

That is very true. One of the culprits was actually a science graduate. So these were a young and aware group of men who held some very violent views with regard to muslim community and their possession of a food item which i personally find stupid to begin with.

I have read the news, it is horrible to know that someone can be killed by the food he stored. All the people around the world should be more tolerant, we need peace and not violence.

Agreed. Hopefully this will create enough public outrage to provide better law-policing and less of religious-policing

That is very true, hope the religious leaders of both the communities take some time out to address the issue and try and mitigate the unjust anger in the mob. Everyone has the right to safety and the right to food of his desire.
