Trick or Treat?

For all of those who are fans of Halloween, you have heard the saying, 'Trick or Treat! Smell my feet! Give me something good to eat!' It seems as the years have gone by, it has been shorted to simply 'trick or treat'.
When I was young and we got all dressed up and went trick or treating, they have a few places in our annual haunts that would play tricks on the kids. In some ways it added to the fun.
There was this one house we went to, which we did every year, that had teenage boys. The teenage boys would don sheets and get on the roof, then jump down as the kids were leaving to scare them. It seemed to work every time too, even though you knew it was coming. The last year in which I went trick or treating, the boys were up to their tricks, but it didn't turn out as planned.
The older of the two boys jumped down to scare the kids, and the howling started. No one paid him any mind for a bit, everyone just thought it was part of the trick. However after 5 minutes or so, and he wasn't getting up, we gathered around to see what the problem was. Of course we was waiting for him to jump up and scream 'boo!'. That never happened. Turns out he broke his right ankle and wrist.
Needless to say it was a trick that went wrong.
Have you ever played a trick on someone at Halloween, and it backfired? Or the trick was on you?

@TexanTornado oh yes, mom made friends with a German lady back in 1957 or 8 and she taught mom how to put candles on the Christmas tree so they could be lit safely, she never used electric lites after that.

@rebelann Oh now that sounds interesting. I think I would have been worried sick about the tree catching on fire, and then the house. You will have to tell me that trick.

Awww that is a shame. Yes, military families hardly ever put down roots, for they are always moving. Sorry you never had the chance to experience such. Were ya'll able to start any traditions what so ever within your family itself. Maybe not Halloween, but Christmas or Thanksgiving?

@TexanTornado Yes, there was about 30 students in architecture from Texas in the town where I was working (they were doing a 4 months internship), and they were organizing a dinner every year for Halloween. I have been invited by them several years.

@topffer Oh that is so nice. It sounds like ya'll were able to introduce each others to the cultures of each of other's country.

Yes, that they can. Oh so you had a little taste of Halloween then? No pun intended.

I had the occasion to witness this celebration when I was in the US a few years ago. Most kids opted for treat than trick.
What I noticed however there were heaps of pumpkins next day, lying on on the side of roads with no takers. I was told they will be treated as garbage.

Oh ya'll don't have 'trick or treat' in India? Do ya'll celebrate Halloween in any kind of way?
Yes, most kids opted for the treat and still do. Hmmm do you mean whole pumpkins left? Cause most all people especially those with children take the pumpkins and make jack-o-lanterns with them.

@TexanTornado My niece did a good job of that but I was talking about unsold pumpkins lying on road sides with no takers.
In India we do not celebrate Halloween

@allknowing Oh ok. I don't think I ever seen discarded pumpkins on the road side. Unless they were put around the 'mailbox'.. which ya'll might call 'letterbox' (not sure) just for decoration.

I understand what you are saying. My sister that just passed didn't let her children celebrate it either. She had changed religions when she married and no longer believed in the celebration of Halloween, but she did it when she was a kid.

@sofssu Yes, we were all raised/confirmed Catholic, but as we all got older we all changed to 'Non Denominational'. However, I am not one who denied my kids the things in which I did. I have an issue with hypocrites. And as they got older they got to chose what they wanted.

@TexanTornado Changed her religion? I am a Bible believing Christian.. So I stick to my faith and I don't allow my children to venture on the other side.. However, now they have made their own choices.

Perhaps it's more of an American thing? Do ya'll have Halloween at all in Switzerland?

@LadyDuck Ah ok. So it is celebrated in Switzerland, just not in Italy. Yes, most of the adult will just have parties. Simply everyone dresses up in costumes, and have a big get together. It can be safer that way.

@IvySaysHi Gulp! Hmm ok. I guess it might be a touchy subject or certain circumstances surrounding it. So I won't ask, for I don't wish to pry.

The only trick i have played is on my boss. We put glue on her mouse and phone etc at work it was funny :). We always play tricks at work, I don't go trick or treating as i'm older now. But if i get invited to go along with my niece and nephew then I will go.

My hubby and his co-workers are the same way. As long as it is done all in fun, I don't see the harm in it. I think for the most part they come to expect the tricks to be played. So then the biggest trick to play, is not to play any and then you watch them looking for them.

Ouch poor guy! In our little town a few houses really put on a grand show. They have caskets, grave stones, the dry ice fog, all sorts of ghouls and goblins decorate the yard and of course someone always jumps out in a horrible costume and scares the kids. I have seen several of the younger children scream their heads off due to this scare tactic. Most of the tots wanted to go straight home right away and said the heck with anymore Trick-or-Treating. I hate that when little kids get the begeebers scared out of them like that.

I have always enjoyed the houses where they truly get into the spirit of the holiday. Yes, it's not always wise to scare the little ones, but those that are 13-14 and still do the trick or treating should get a scare and I am sure they look forward to it too.

Yes, that they do. It was all in fun, just the fun went wrong.
I'm starting to think it's more of an American thing.

Mine, were always fun too. I didn't mind the tricks, the weenie roasts, the sitting around telling ghost stories.

Really? I just assumed it came with the territory sorta of speak. We used to love the tricks. We always got a treat, but some tricks were accompanied by them.
