It's so quiet

I am still sick, so much so that I spent most of the afternoon and evening lying on the couch, watching old movies I have already seen so I wouldn't miss anything if I fell asleep. In my feverish state, I find it refreshing and bracing to open the back door and just sit there, letting the cool wind blow on me and getting a needed dose of oxygen. I just came from there, and I noticed something odd. It's very quiet. The crickets are gone, probably because it is so cold. But there are other sounds missing. Namely, the wind chimes. The wind is kicking it up out there, so there should be clanging coming from every direction. I swear every house in the neighborhood has wind chimes. Some are light and tinkling. Some have a deeper sound. One set sounds like cow bells. It's the hurricane. It's heading north and people are battening down the hatches. And taking down the wind chimes. What a blessed relief. I have to say that some days the cacophony of chiming noises is simply grating. Still, I don't mind the odd melodic tinkling. But I can sure do without the clanging bells of a herd of cows. Are you a wind chime person? Chime in and tell me yes or no and why?

I bought a wind chime years ago, the first night I put it outside the wind came in, I heard the noise and I thought "my God, it's going to annoy the neighbors" I got out of the bed in the mid of the night to take it inside. This ends my wind chime story. Nobody here has wind chimes.

I have a small set that I put on the outside of the inside door, if that makes sense. Normally, they only sound when someone goes in or out. But on a very windy day, they do tinkle a bit. So, I always take them down if they make noise, even though eve ryone else has chimes going day and night.

@Rollo1 I am pretty sure there here at 10:01 pm they would call the police to say that your are making noise after the allowed hour. The good and the bad of this country.

We do not tend to have wind chimes around highly populated residential areas, so they are something that I very rarely encounter. I am pleased about this because any repetitive sound will eventually become quite irritating.

@Rollo1 A vast number of chimes during a strong wind would sound almost as bad as some of the records currently in the Top Ten.

I certainly wouldn't have any if we lived in an apartment complex, for instance. It is not something you really should be sharing with everyone because not everyone is going to appreciate it. I am on the fence with wind chimes. Now and again, they sound nice. But not when it's windy and everyone has them.

I love wind chimes.. I love the tinkling noises and the cow bells.. I had three of them strung on chains in front of my house and I would love to hear them chime softly.. I often dream of being in a pasture or a meadows with cows and lambs playing.. Hope you get well soon..

I have only 1 wind chime and it is a red cardinal. My friend gave it to me last year.

saddened to hear yer still feelin' poorly - sendin' healin' hugs. i'm quite enamored with wind chimes myself 'n 've quite a few out back...'s well 's some indoors that i like to jest brush by 'r listen in awe when they 'go off' on their own due to temperature changes. i prefer the deeper tones, those high pitched'uns get'n my nerves.

But you probably can hear only your own chimes, and not a neighborhood's worth. Sometimes I don't mind them, other times it's just too much noise.

Oh yes I love them although when there is windy weather I tend to tie them down. In fact I brought a six foot set of 8 chimes when I was in the USA and brought them home to England. These are tuned so sound so much nicer on the ear!

I haven't run across tuned wind chimes. I suppose if they were tuned so they couldn't make discordant noises, they would be nicely musical.

@Rollo1 Yes I bought them in NC but I think they were made in California and are a full octave!

Yes I do enjoy the sound of wind chimes and have had several. Where we live now I notice that there is no sound of wind chimes. Just lots of dogs barking, hehe

Maybe if you put up some wind chimes, the music would soothe the savage dogs?

I'm a definite wind chime person! There is something so relaxing in hearing the chimes dance to the gentle breeze of the wind!

In a gentle breeze, they can sound lovely. But in a wind, they sound noisy, I think.

Those cow bells remind me of my trip to Jungfrau. We had to take a cable car to get to the railway station for our onward journey. As I went up that cable car I could hear the tapering sounds of bells tied round cows that were grazing down below. That sound is still ringing in my ears.

I have cat wind chimes that a Friend of mine made for me. I spray painted them purple.

I like the sound of wind chimes, but if the wind gets stronger that it can get rather annoying.

I can imagine the noise. I am not a wind chime person probably because of those first 25 adult years living in Kansas. The wind always blows like a hurricane in Kansas. My brother in upstate NY has a beauty that almost sounds like quiet church bells. I do love them.

I can imagine how the wind blows in Kansas, all those flat plains to blow across. Wind chimes can get on your nerves if there are too many of them.
