Making Excuses, or Making Things Happen?

It occurs to me that one thing I am very good at, is finding an excuse. There is always a reason that things don't get done as they should. The truth is that most of the time I have no one to blame but myself. Sure, life throws obstacles in my path everyday, but maybe I should concentrate more on going over and around them than simply sitting down and saying "I can't do this, that great big thing is blocking my way". I was watching a video of Helen Keller this morning. Helen Keller was left blind and deaf following an illness when she was just 19 months old. She never heard or saw anything from the time she was a baby. Yet, when the right teacher - Anne Sullivan - came along, she learned sign language, and braille and even became a famous lecturer and inspiration to others born with blindness or deafness. And yet, she never learned how to speak normally. She tried to imitate the way people placed their lips and tongues when they spoke, but her speech was difficult to understand. And that was the greatest disappointment to her. Think of it. She could not hear people speaking, she could not even hear herself speaking, but she wanted desperately to speak normally to others. With all of the difficulties and obstacles in her life that she had already overcome, her greatest desire was to communicate with others in a way that was most normal to them. Helen Keller is one of those people who make you realize that you can make excuses, or you can make things happen. But you can't do both.
Helen Keller explains about her Greatest Disappointment in life....that she could not speak normally. The audio Transcript is as follows: " In this room sits...

There are always excuses for things that we do not like to do. I kept saying I had no time for stitching. The fact was that I never liked stitching.

It is much harder to motivate yourself to do something you don't want to do. Like get up and go to work. But most people do it anyway.

I often end up making excuses if i'm reluctant in doing something. Its amusing how easily you convince your brain that you are not supposed to do something.

that is easy to do and many of us do that every day in regards to many things. We need to want to overcome.

@Rollo1 I am backing on that. This is how we can probably make things happen.

I procrastinate, too. That means I end up doing everything at the last minute.

Helen Keller's story is a reminder to us all that we can take responsibility for our own lives if we want things to happen.

Yep, no excuses. Of course, I am not always going to like that on days when I want excuses.

I know I try to justify me when I have not done something I had to do before the end of a day, I believe it's human and we tend to procrastinate, at least those tasks we like less.

I think we all want to feel we are justified in whatever we do or don't do. I do think some people have obstacles. Perhaps the obstacles give them more de termination to overcome at times.

yepperz, excuses get'cha nowhere but disappointment 'n tends to be a recurrin' cycle which wears on ones self-worth. ms. keller was most blessed to've ms. sullivan come into her life 'n possess not only the knowledge, but the patience to break through those barriers. jest imagine how many folks're out there who're locked inside 'emselves, not 'avin' the correct person(s) come 'long to help 'em open those doors. brilliant individuals with so much knowledge, whit 'n compassion....

I think it's a sad thing to contemplate. We all naturally have these words and expressions to tell the world how we feel and sight and sound to find out about the world. It must have been a very lonely world for Helen before Annie Sullivan arrived.

It is all too easy to justify to oneself not doing something, especially if we have no desire whatsoever to do it.

That is true as well. We have to have a motivation. We need to want to overcome something enough to actually work hard enough to do it.

When I set my mind to something I"m pretty good about getting it accomplished. There are times I want to give up because it seems overwhelming, but I always push through and get it done in the end.

All of us are good at making excuses. I think the successful ones are the ones who are too busy trying to make things work, and they have to no time and no energy to make excuses. After all, we only deceive ourselves when we make excuses. We could have used our time and energy to better our lives.

I think making things happen should be in mind all the time. We worry about problems at hand instead of dreams we have. we eithe rmake oour dreams stronger or our problems. it all depends on that.

We have to be willing to look beyond the problems if we want to get to the dreams.

It is a lot easier to make excused than to do things right away. I am even guilty of doing that. I think every one is.

After I watch that movie about Helen Keller I am always so motivated. Unfortunately, it doesn't last. I revert to my old "bad habit" of procrastinating too much.

I think that many of us do that. Maybe it's because we have different challenges.

That's very true, everyone faces obstacles, it's the people who overcome them who achieve great things!

That does make a person give a second or third thought to things. We all have the same amount of time in the day and we need to use it as best we can to go where we want to go.

She really is an inspiration to us all. I also make excuses, especially if it's something that I don't want to do. I will procrastinate until I have no choice but to do it.
