Would You Put Salt In Your Coffee?

If, by mistake, it already happened to you, to added a teaspoon of salt in your coffee, you are surely replying, never again in my life. I know how bad the salted coffee tastes, as it happened to me. Now, we are not talking about a teaspoon, but a very little pinch of salt. I know that it can sounds odd, but a pinch of salt, in the ground coffee before brewing helps to reduce the bitterness. Do not do this if you buy good expensive coffee beans. If you have bought a cheap coffee that does not taste too good and it's too bitter, try this trick. Remember, only a very small pinch, or it will taste even worse. Have you ever tried?

I could not believe that I came across this post Anna. I thought that I was the only person on the planet ever to have drunk coffee with salt. This happened to me many years ago when I was working at a town centre hotel in the public bar. Each morning the staff would prepare the bar then get coffee and toast from the kitchens. On this particular day I was the one who went to the kitchen to bring the coffee and toast. In my absence someone had the idea of switching the sugar in the bowl for salt as a practical joke. When I returned I put a spoonful of what I considered to be sugar in my coffee and took a small sip. As soon as I tasted it I knew exactly what had happened, so I decided to pretend that I had not noticed. We sat chatting for a while and I took a few more drinks of coffee, with people looking at me bewildered. I remember that Betty was the first to concede and ask me how my coffee was, to which I replied "Fine, why"? I found it quite amusing seeing the confusion on their faces.

@LadyDuck Once I had taken a sip I realised what it was, it was quite easy to continue and act oblivious to the fact.

Oh my, poor Barry, I can imagine your pain in drinking the salted coffee. It is horrible.

It is a popular recipe to induce vomiting when someone is drunk, but I never had to try it myself.

Yes, a teaspoon of salt in the coffee is terrible, the worst thing I have ever tried. A little pinch (very little) in cheap coffee works... anyway the coffee would be bad.

I haven't heard of that. Now I know. I should try to put some in the coffee maker at the office just to check if it's true.

@Beatburn Be careful with the quantity, remember: only a little pinch.

I don't think I would like the taste of salt in my coffee. I am trying to experience the full taste of coffee when it is of good quality. We have bad coffee at the office sometimes but it's filtered. Do you think I could add a pinch of salt in the filter with the coffee and see how it comes out? I wouldn't like to add it straight in the cup.

Maybe the good method to have a better coffee, but don't tell that you put salt in it.

@topffer I will be the first to try. If it comes out tasting good, I will let others try as well and keep it a secret about the salt.

I've never knowingly put salt in my coffee, but I have noticed how nice coffee tastes when drunk at the seaside on a windy day with waves crashing onto the shore - could this be why?

Sure that it could be, or it depends in which location you had that coffee. Of course at the seaside in south of Italy the coffee is good.

Erm yes once. My mother inadvertently put Epsom salts in my coffee which I had taken a great mouthful. Boy did I pay for it later. It is not something I would do usually and as I only drink coffee I never buy cheap coffee ever.

Epsom salts in your coffee must have tasted awful and I don't know if I would ever drink it again after that.

Gary, I believe you can imagine that I do not buy cheap coffee, so I would never put a pinch of salt in my coffee. It happened that I was offered coffee that was terribly bitter and no matter how much sugar you add, it always taste bitter, in that case it is worth trying.

@LadyDuck I can not imagine you buying horrible coffee after all you are from the country of connoisseurs of coffee! I might give it a try if I get a cup of rough coffee! There are some cafes where I will not even have coffee because it is so bad.

A pinch in the ground beans if it's too bitter, not a teaspoon in your coffee, this I would also never do.

If the coffee is very bitter and bad, I put a pinch of salt in the grounds while it brews, but not in my cup. You are right with not to use in better coffee, because if you take out too much bitterness, it doesn't really taste like coffee.

It is exactly what I suggest, to add a pinch in the grounds, absolutely not in the cup. I tried and it works.

@LadyDuck Not much of a coffee drinker, anyway, gives me palpitations, but inadverdently making tea with sparkling water, rather than bottled still..... is pretty disgusting, so don't try it!

I have never tried this Anna. I remember doing a home visit to a client and she talked on and on and made coffee to which she constantly added teaspoons of sugar. I drank it because I didn't know what else to do. I might try the pinch of salt if ever my coffee tastes bitter

@LadyDuck I never thought of adding a salt.[em]lol[/em.If it is not totally different then I guess I will try it. This remember me to my mom whenever she cooks something sweet she also added a little salt.whenever I asked why.she always said to make the taste more balance.

No, I have never done this and don't think I ever would. Not that I don't believe you or anything. I guess I just never came across a coffee that I home brew that is that bitter. If I did, I think I would just simply change the brand of coffee I was buying.

@LadyDuck Oh ok. So was it still the same name brand that you usually buy or were you trying a new brand? I will have to keep the trick in mind though, in case I ever run across that issue.

Usually the coffee I buy is very good, for good quality coffee this trick is not needed. Months ago I remember that 1 bag of coffee was too bitter, possibly the beans were too much roasted, the salt helped a little.

I've never tried this before. I don't like strong coffee at all so my coffee is weak compared to what others drink. Even then, sometimes it can taste bitter. I will give this a try and see how it works.
