Do you use your credit card?

I used to have a credit card but haven't had one for years now, and I really don't miss it. I hated the feeling of being in debt and of having to pay interest on the money I had borrowed. However, I know that some people use credit cards all the time and don't bat an eyelid over it. Indeed, I gather that there is some kudos in acquiring a high "credit rating" on the assumption that you are going to want to borrow money on your credit card and the higher your credit limit the more fulfilled you feel! I know that you can always pay off your credit card on time and avoid paying interest, but clearly not everyone does that or the credit card companies would soon be out of business. Do you use your card? And do you worry about owing money on it?

I do use my credit cards to pay bills at times, when I fall short and don't have enough in my account to pay them. I don't like to use them to buy things, as if I don't have the money for something, I just don't buy it.

@sherryeb It is very easy to use a credit card to buy things, but I have decided, that if I don't have the money to pay for something, then I will just not buy it until I do.

I only use my card if I absolutely have to. I am trying to pay off some of my cards..although they have been life savers, they are not to be used for everyday purchases. They are a trap.

That is where most people get hung up...everyday purchases and then they can not pay it back

@sherryeb If I only pay the minimum I will be paying for years. The interest is outrageous.

Yes I do have a credit card. I will sometimes use it for small purchases. Although I haven't always been smart with it, but I've learned my lesson.

I try to use my credit card all the time. I have never owed a single cent throughout all the years that I used my credit card. I always save up for whatever I want to buy before I go out and buy. It does not matter if I pay with credit card or debit card or cash, I just make sure that I have the budget for it.

I have a credit card but I guess I am using it quite carefully now. I learned a lesson on using the credit card. I had been on debt for 2 to 3 years because of this. But I maintained paying the minimum payable amount only because I could not anymore afford to pay all in a month. I did it little by little until the amount of my debt is manageable. I can fully pay the monthly bill. So now, I am using the credit card wisely.

@indexer yes it was really hard going out of it. I can still remember how I struggled just to make my debt easier to manage.

Yes, it is very easy to get into trouble in this way but far from easy to get out of it.

We have one credit card. One of our cats had a little growth on his face. I took him to the Vet- over fifty dollars out just there. The doc said that the cyst was filled with mast cells- cancer. It needed to go. Surgery etc. cost over 400.00. Yep. We used the credit card. Hoping to pay it off at tax refund time. We hope the cyst does not return. I did not have the extra moolah for seeing if the cancer had spread inwards. Kitty looks healthy otherwise.

With a big bill like this, that has to be paid quickly, might it be possible to raise a loan from elsewhere to pay back the credit card bill and therefore end up paying a lower rate of interest?

@indexer If I pay more than the minimum each month the credit union does not charge interest. You raise a good question.

Like you, I had a credit card many years ago but do not have one at present. When I had a credit card it was purely for convenience. If I went out to buy a large item such as television or 3 piece suite then it would be impossible to predict how much I was likely to spend. Rather than carry a large sum of money and end up taking some back to pay into the bank, I would use my card and pay it off as soon as the bill arrived. When debit cards were available at my bank I switched to that system, which really serves the same purpose for me. As you say, people do use them for almost anything and I have seen someone use a credit card to buy a coffee.

I dont have an credit card at all. I use my debit card for the cashless transactions. Its better to be in our limits on spending rather than being under debts.

Yes I use one as I often have to buy stuff for my part time nobs and then get reimbursed. Always good to have in an emergency. For example my sister is not doing too well in the U.K. and the fare is so expensive so in an emergency I can use my credit card to help pay the fare. Useful to have but it is important to use it wisely

Yes. I use my credit card a lot, but I usually pay it in full every month. It is a way of keeping my finances straight. And I can read what I bought any time at the computer.

I had one, but I never used it. I wanted to keep it, for emergencies. But they cancelled it.

I use my credit card only for big purchases and pay it right away: never paid a cent of interest.

I use my credit card whenever I make bigger purchases. I usually pay everything on time though. I've never owed them anything.

Actually I do not use cash. I uses it as long as I can credit the item I am purchasing and once the bill reached us, we pay it in full amount. :) I am acquiring miles and we availing many promotions from citibank.
